Recently, the Insectary facility at TIGS successfully hosted a 3-day workshop, 'Beyond the Bite: Exploring Essentials of Mosquito Biology and Rearing'. This engaging workshop combined expert talks with hands-on practical sessions, offering participants an in-depth understanding of mosquito biology, vector research, and the latest developments in the field. The workshop was attended by a diverse group of 20 participants from six different states across the country, engaging in interactive discussions and activities that covered key topics such as mosquito rearing, collection techniques, and dissections. These sessions were designed to enhance participants expertise in exploring the complex world of mosquitoes. 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗸𝘀𝗵𝗼𝗽 𝗛𝗶𝗴𝗵𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝘀: 🦟 𝗘𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗿𝘁-𝗹𝗲𝗱 𝗦𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀: Insights into mosquito biology, vector research, and biocontrol strategies, delivered by leading experts in the field. 🦟 𝗛𝗮𝗻𝗱𝘀-𝗼𝗻 𝗣𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗦𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀: Participants gained practical experience in mosquito collection, surveillance, handling and rearing in the insectary, as well as dissecting key epidemiologically significant tissues. 🦟 𝗡𝗲𝘁𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗢𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀: Attendees had the chance to connect with professionals and fellow researchers in entomology, fostering collaboration and knowledge exchange. 📝 TIGS and ICAR - IIRR ink MoU! #Climatechange presents a significant threat to crop yields, and malnutrition remains a serious issue in India. To address some of these challenges, TIGS and ICAR-IIRR have partnered to create rice varieties which are climate-resilient that can thrive in changing environmental conditions, while also improving its nutritional value. The two organizations will also work together to advance rice technologies for societal benefit. Indian Institute of Rice Research (ICAR-IIRR) is a premier institute with a mission of developing technologies to enhance rice productivity, resource and input use efficiency, and profitability of rice cultivation without adversely affecting the environment. We are thrilled to announce that IOTA DIAGNOSTIC has partnered with the Tata Institute for Genetics and Society, India (TIGS) to expand the applications of our innovative BioSampling Technologies—BioSampler and M-Strip—in the field of diagnostics. Key Highlights of Our Collaboration: 1. Newborn Screening: Our BioSampler, utilizing dried matrix technology and micro-sampling, is designed for the efficient collection, preservation, and transportation of bio-fluid samples at room temperature for lab analysis. This collaboration aims to develop newborn screening tests using the BioSampler device. 2. STI Diagnostics: Our M-Strip—an indigenous, cutting-edge menstrual blood collection device—will be adapted for STI diagnosis, making testing more accessible and affordable for women across India, particularly in resource-limited settings. This device has been validated for HPV detection and empowers women to ensure their safety through self-sampling in the comfort and privacy of their homes for cervical cancer and STI screening test. Together, we are committed to pioneering advancements in diagnostic technology and improving health outcomes for communities. For those unfamiliar with our history, Mr Tata was the first to believe in our mission and strategy. His steadfast commitment to building a better world through science and technology inspired and guided us all. Mr Tata wholeheartedly believed in the potential of innovation to tackle the world’s most complex social and environmental challenges. His faith in Social Alpha’s mission and encouragement have been crucial to our success. His guidance has shaped our journey and will continue to influence us in all that we do. RNT was much more than a benefactor to Social Alpha—he was a mentor, a friend, and a constant source of strength. His humility, generosity, and unwavering belief in the power of innovation touched the lives of everyone who had the privilege to know him. Since RNT's passing on October 9th, much has been written in tribute to his remarkable life. In recognition of his immense contributions and lifelong dedication to innovation, Social Alpha is proud to announce the establishment of the annual RNT Award. While we are still working out the details, this annual award will honour and celebrate scientist-entrepreneurs working to solve the most pressing issues facing people and the planet. I had the pleasure of moderating a panel with several esteemed panellists today at the Smart Protein Forum 2024 at TDU! The focus of the discussion was on strengthening the smart protein ecosystem in Karnataka. 🧬🌿 Parnika Pavanram from the IT BT Department, Karnataka spoke of the inclusion of smart protein in the Karnataka Biotechnology Policy 2024-2029 and announced working with the sector to establish smart protein focused facilities such as a potential biofoundry and Center of Excellence. Dr Rakesh Mishra from the Tata Institute for Genetics and Society, India, (who submitted a cultivated meat proposal to the Department of Biotechnology back in 2018) spoke about his learnings from the ₹4.5 Cr grant to the Atal Incubation Centre - CCMB. He recommended that smart protein grant proposals need to have a vision of scaling up solutions beyond lab scale research. To strengthen the point on supporting the scale up of smart proteins, Dr Sunil Laxman from the Institute for Stem Cell Science and Regenerative Medicine (DBT-inStem) spoke about the collaborative role that existing research institutes in Karnataka can play, especially in channelling talent from biological sciences into the smart protein sector. In order to successfully scale, Prasad Nair from String Bio Private Limited and Dr. Priyankana Mukherjee from IKP Knowledge Park touched upon the need for deepening the regulatory environment for smart proteins with the support from the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India. Rinka Banerjee from Thinking Forks summed up our conversation about how the government of Karnataka must establish high quality, world-class production facilities for smart proteins to keep up with the growing demand for nutritious, high-protein foods. 🧠 Raising Awareness about Huntington's Disease! 🧠 TIGS in collaboration with Huntington's Disease Society of India is launching the Huntington’s Disease (HD) awareness campaign with posters curated under the expert guidance of Dr. Sanjeev Jain and Dr. Meera Purushottam from National Institute of Mental Health and Neuro Sciences (NIMHANS), India. These initiatives aim to create awareness about Huntington’s among clinicians, healthcare practitioners, and the general public. ✨ The clinician-focused poster provides valuable insights for early diagnosis and management strategies, helping medical professionals offer better care to patients. The posters were designed to align with the most recent research and therapeutic advancements in the field. ✨ The storyboard takes a different approach—highlighting lived experiences of those affected by HD, making the complex science behind the disease more relatable and easier to understand. This interactive and visual tool is designed to spark conversations and break the silence around HD. Both posters were featured at the recently held NIMHANS Mental Health Santhe, a vibrant event bringing together healthcare professionals, patients, caregivers, and the public to foster dialogue around mental health and neurological disorders.
