💥 EXCITING NEWS | The APAC Regulatory Coordination forum by APAC Society for Cellular Agriculture and The Good Food Institute APAC released two White Papers outlining collaborative opportunities for governments to support the cultivated meat sector. 🥩 https://lnkd.in/g2MfWFUX 📝 The whitepapers developed in collaboration with industry, academia, and regulatory stakeholders across 10 APAC jurisdictions, including Chandana Tekkatte and Astha Gaur from GFI India, tackle essential safety assessments for cell line development and culture media components. 🤝 The white papers were launched at the Singapore International AgriFood Week organised by Singapore Food Agency (SFA) which also hosted the 5th roundtable on Novel Food Regulations last week. We were honoured to be part of the invite-only roundtable of global stakeholders in the novel food ecosystem to share best practices and experiences on safety assessment and regulation of novel foods like cultivated meat and unique considerations for producing biomass and precision fermentation-derived ingredients. 🚀 Wait, there’s more! A Safety Assessed Media Ingredient (SAMI) list for cultivated meat (prepared by Vireo Advisors, LLC in collaboration with The Good Food Institute APAC and Future Ready Food Safety Hub @ NTU) was also released and discussed at the roundtable. The SAMI list aims to develop an internationally harmonised approach for assessing the safety of culture media components used in the production of cultivated meat and seafood. 🌏 The SFA intends to share the SAMI list along with the categorisation framework at a multinational level through the CODEX Alimentarius Commission as part of a proposal for a global guideline for food safety assessment of cell culture media components used in cultivated food production. About us
The alternative protein sector is at the forefront of global food innovation, with major benefits for people, planet, and profit. Making foods that taste the same or better and cost the same or less than their animal-derived counterparts, with vastly lower impacts on planetary health - now that’s *smart protein*. At the Good Food Institute India, we’re laying the groundwork for this sunrise industry, and demonstrating a model for a more secure, sustainable, and just food system in the developing world. GFI India’s team of experts across science and technology, business, and policy works to build the smart protein sector from the ground up in the world's largest democracy. We build pivotal networks, conduct and freely disseminate high-impact research, and provide critical advisory support. By working with governments, entrepreneurs, large food and biotech corporations, philanthropies, universities, and other partners across the food supply, we’re putting sustainable protein on the menu.

📣 BREAKING: After the U.S. and Singapore, cultivated meat lands in Hong Kong! Just six months after a successful debut in Singapore’s alternative protein market, Vow is on a hot streak with the launch of their Japanese cultivated quail in Hong Kong—a first for China! 💥 With Asia’s biggest financial hub embracing the future of food, it sets the stage for greater collaboration and knowledge sharing across Asia and will pave the way for other countries in the region to explore the potential of this emerging industry. In more good news, People For Animals Public Policy Foundation (PFAPPF) made a representation to Food Safety and Standards Authority of India for framing cultivated meat regulations in India. “In India, where the balance between urbanization, rising food and protein demands, public health concerns, and ecological sustainability is delicate, fermentation-derived and cultivated products present a timely and promising solution," says Gauri Maulekhi in Mint’s recent article on this new development. https://lnkd.in/dR2bPyZ7 Read The Good Food Institute APAC’s newsletter for more on Vow’s launch: https://lnkd.in/dK-NrJiP Priyanka Sharma

Today, agriculture contributes a third of global GHG emissions, with animal agriculture alone accounting for up to 20%. As the global demand for meat surges, transforming how we produce it is essential for a sustainable future. Alternative proteins—produced from plants, microorganisms, or animal cells—can reduce emissions by up to 92% and help complement the protein demand with sustainable and resilient supply chains. But to scale this solution, continued innovation and robust investment are needed. As climate finance takes centre stage at #COP29, aligning climate funding with scalable solutions like alternative proteins can accelerate progress towards the Paris Agreement goals. Tune in to Bruce Friedrich’s hosted session tomorrow at 12:30 p.m. IST to learn from powerful voices about alternative proteins for climate, hunger, and global health: https://lnkd.in/dSqAtH3V
