World Antimicrobial Awareness Week (18-24 Nov 2024) is here, and the stakes couldn’t be higher. Delhi’s air quality has reached hazardous levels, and a groundbreaking study in The Lancet Planetary Health reveals a troubling connection: rising PM2.5 air pollution is driving antibiotic resistance worldwide. 🔹 What is AMR? Antimicrobial resistance occurs when bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites no longer respond to medications, making infections harder to treat. In 2019, bacterial AMR was directly responsible for 1.27 million deaths and contributed to 4.95 million more globally. 🔹 Why does this matter? Airborne particulate matter (PM2.5) doesn’t just harm our lungs and carries resistant bacteria and genes, accelerating the spread of AMR. This highlights an urgent need for a One Health approach, addressing the connections between human, animal, and environmental health. 🔹 What can we do? 🏭 Control air pollution to reduce AMR spread. 👍 Practice good hygiene. 🛡 Use antimicrobials responsibly.
