Thematic interdisciplinary research that addresses major questions in human biology based on stem cell science.
About us
Research at DBT-inStem addresses the genetic mechanisms of potency, differentiation and proliferation in human pluripotent cells, examines clinical manifestations of diseases that can potentially be treated by stem cells, models human diseases using stem cells, uses model organisms such as Planaria and Hydra to address fundamental questions in regenerative biology, develops platforms to interrogate signaling pathways with new chemical entities, and finally, develops tools that will help to better understand the biology driving stem cells and eventually treat disease states. At DBT-inStem, research is primarily carried out by groups who work on tightly-knit themes, crossing boundaries and developing new approaches to address questions larger than the expertise of individual researchers.

Freelance science journalist. Words in Scientific American, New Scientist, The Hindu and more. Science journalism intern at The Scientist.
Can the principles of economics explain how cells deal with nutrient shortages? Turns out, they can. Sunil Laxman, Swagata Adhikary, and team recently proved this experimentally! In my first article for IndiaBioscience IBS, I cover research that can make one look at biological systems from a whole new perspective. https://lnkd.in/dv_J9VmA Thanks to Vijay Jayaraman, Ph.D. for his comments, and Ankita Rathore, PhD for her edits.

This is a lovely article by Sneha Khedkar in IndiaBioscience IBS on our recent work that uncovers economic strategies used by cells to prioritize resources. DBT-Institute for Stem Cell Science and Regenerative Medicine (DBT-inStem) DBT/WT India Alliance Department of Biotechnology
Researchers led by Sunil Laxman, from the Institute for Stem Cell Science and Regenerative Medicine, Bengaluru, have experimentally shown that cells follow principles of economics when they encounter nutrient limitation. Their results provide an economic framework for prioritisation strategies used by cells on facing nutrient limitation. ✍️ Written by Sneha Khedkar Read the entire #news article here 👇 https://buff.ly/4dWjbUr

EMBO Practical Course 'Metabolite & species dynamics in microbial communities' was held at inStem from 13th to 18th October! This annual cross-hub course (inStem Bangalore/EMBL Heidelberg) has participants from diverse backgrounds engaged in talks, discussions, & experiments! After the inaugural talks, the participants started a Kefir culture! They collected #Kefir samples to understand microbial composition and metabolites present in Kefir - the milk based fermented drink - throughout the fermentation process. By Day 3 the Practical Sessions on Metabolomics and Sequencing gained pace - participants discussed the nuances of the techniques. They visited the mass spectrometry facility for demonstrations and set up their own #metabolomics experiments. Day 4 continued in lectures & demonstrations in #metagenomics, Probing interactions & #microbial community dynamics! Day 5 saw a brainy treasure hunt! Participants got mental exercise outside the lab before more chemical biology, #computation & modelling - Inspired them to think out of the box! On the last day, participants on both sides described observations- How the microbial population in Kefir cultures changed over time through metabolomic & genomic data analysis & visualization. A hearty dinner at Bangalore and bye-bye until next time! Sunil Laxman EMBL Events Department of Biotechnology
