I’ve been meaning to share a truly enriching experience that I had during May-June, when I got the privilege of interning at the Regional Centre for Biotechnology (RCB), an institution of National Importance under the Department of Biotechnology, Government of India,(established under UNESCO ). I worked in the Genomic Integrity and Evolution Lab under the mentorship and guidance of Dr. Deepak Nair , gaining hands-on experience in a variety of core molecular biology techniques. During my internship, I quickly learned that the world of molecular biology is much more than just pipettes and Petri dishes (though I definitely got my fair share of both!). I got to dive into techniques such as Transformation, PCR Purification, Gene Synthesis, Plasmid Isolation, and Competent Cell Preparation. These foundational methods in genetic engineering and molecular biology provided me with invaluable skills for my future endeavors. Additionally, I had the opportunity to explore Cryo-Electron Microscopy (Cryo-EM), a state-of-the-art tool for visualizing molecular structures at near-atomic resolution. Witnessing Cryo-EM in action was an inspiring experience that highlighted the intersection of advanced technology and scientific discovery.Imagine seeing proteins in their native state at near-atomic resolution! That’s some next-level stuff. Another highlight of my internship was visiting RCB’s Animal Centrewhere I gained insight into the ethical considerations and practical aspects of working with animal models in research. I am deeply grateful to my PI, Dr. Deepak T. Nair, and PhD Scholar DHIRAJ KUMAR SUTHAR for their mentorship and unwavering support. This internship has profoundly impacted my perspective on research and has significantly enhanced my technical skills.
