The National Centre for Biological Sciences (NCBS), located in Bangalore, is part of the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research. The mandate of NCBS is fundamental research in the frontier areas of biology. Research interests range from the study of single molecules to ecology and evolution. Along with inStem and C-CAMP it forms the Bangalore Bio-Cluster, bringing together fundamental research, translational studies, and technology development. We are a premier research institute with all the necessary facilities that a research scientist may need. Research interests of our faculty members lie in the frontier areas of biology, and the science at NCBS (a part of the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research ) uses experimental and computational approaches in the study of molecules, cells and organisms. We aim to understand biology at each of these levels to advance an integrated view of life processes. The talent and drive of our students and faculty members continue to show us the way to good science. NCBS’s main campus is in Gandhi Krishi Vigyan Kendra (GKVK) on Bellary Road, in the north of Bangalore. The campus has accommodation for students, visitors and faculty and facilities for childcare, sports and recreation. Another campus, close by and which continues to be developed, has additional student accommodation.

🦅 The recent workshop on Specimen-Based Research on Birds brought together 20 participants from across the country, offering a unique opportunity for hands-on learning and cross-regional collaboration. 🦅The workshop focused on the critical techniques and methodologies used in the study of #birdspecimens —ranging from collection and preservation to data analysis and ethical considerations. 🦅Participants, including #ornithologists, researchers, and students, were introduced to best practices for handling specimens, the importance of accurate documentation, and the role of specimens in #biodiversityconservation. 🦅The event featured expert-led sessions, practical demonstrations, and group discussions aimed at enhancing participants’ understanding of how museum collections and field specimens contribute to ornithological research and environmental monitoring. 🦅Through this collaborative effort, attendees shared insights from their respective regions, fostering a deeper appreciation for the diversity of bird species across the country. The workshop successfully encouraged networking, knowledge exchange, and the development of new research ideas, strengthening the foundation for future collaborations in #AvianResearch.

Deep beneath the surface, a conversation is happening- between roots, microbes, and fungi! Dr Amey Redkar and team at NCBS are studying these underground connections to understand the good and the bad of root- microbial interactions. 🍄 While fungi like mushrooms find a place on our plates, others sneak their way into plant roots, causing diseases that devastate crops like bananas, tomatoes and so many more! ▶ Check out this video to know more: -------------------------------------------------------------------- Credits: Video by Mrunal Kulkarni/ NCBS Communication Office Videography by Anzal Ks, NCBS Dr Amey Redkar Vidha Srivastava Syona Baptista Thomas LPCB images of Fusarium oxysporum from: https://lnkd.in/g3zE-w4A
This Children's Day, the kids at Dolna—NCBS's on-campus childcare facility—enjoyed a live magic show! For 25 years, Dolna has supported our researchers, empowering them to focus on their scientific careers with the assurance that their children are nearby in a safe, nurturing, and intellectually stimulating environment.
