About us
Heart disease is the leading cause of death. For more than 75 years, the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) has led the fight against heart and vascular diseases. The NHLBI supports research to advance the understanding of and interventions for pediatric and adult heart and vascular diseases, including heart attack, heart failure, stroke, and congenital heart disease. To further support public health efforts, NHLBI created The Heart Truth® in 2002. It is the first federally-sponsored national health education program designed to raise awareness about heart disease as the leading cause of death in women. The Heart Truth established the Healthy Hearts Network to expand its reach into local communities and collaborate with health and community professionals on heart health education initiatives. Did you know smoking is a major risk factor for heart disease? The chemicals inhaled during smoking cause significant damage to the heart and blood vessels, increasing the likelihood of developing atherosclerosis, or plaque buildup in the arteries. Even occasional smoking can cause this damage. Certain groups, such as women who use birth control pills and individuals with diabetes, face even greater risks. Additionally, smoking exacerbates other heart disease risk factors like unhealthy cholesterol levels, high blood pressure, and obesity. Smoking also raises the risk of peripheral artery disease (PAD), where plaque builds up in the arteries that supply blood to the head, organs, arms, and legs. Those with PAD are at a higher risk for coronary heart disease, heart attack, and stroke. Secondhand smoke is equally harmful, damaging the heart and blood vessels of non-smokers in the same way it affects smokers. #GreatAmericanSmokeout #HeartHealth #TobaccoFree

Research investigators interested in closing critical knowledge gaps in women’s cardiovascular health internationally are encouraged to submit letters of intent to the Global Cardiovascular Research Funders Forum (GCRFF) by January 15, 2025. The GCRFF will fund one world-class international research program for up to US $10 million over five years.
