About us
Getting the right amount of uninterrupted sleep at the right time of day is key to one’s overall health. About 50 to 70 million Americans have sleep or wakefulness disorders. Sleep deficiency and untreated sleep disorders are associated with a growing number of health problems, including heart disease, high blood pressure, stroke, diabetes, obesity, and certain cancers. Sleep disorders can also be costly. Each year, sleep disorders, sleep deprivation, and sleepiness add to the national health care bill. Undiagnosed sleep apnea alone is estimated to cost the Nation $150 billion annually. Additional costs to society for related health problems, lost worker productivity, and accidents make sleep disorders a serious public health concern. The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) funds research to discover better ways to promote and achieve sleep health, inform public policy, and increase community awareness to enhance human health. The NHLBI is advancing research and clinical care for people with sleep disorders. As we adjust our clocks for daylight saving time, it’s a perfect reminder of the importance of maintaining a consistent sleep routine. ️ Why does this matter? Research shows that disruptions in your sleep patterns can have significant impacts on your heart health. Consistent, quality sleep helps regulate blood pressure, reduce stress, and support overall cardiovascular function.️ Here are a few tips to keep your sleep routine on track: 1. Stick to a Schedule: Go to bed and wake up at the same time every day, even on weekends. 2. Create a Relaxing Bedtime Routine: Wind down with calming activities like reading or meditation. 3. Limit Screen Time: Reduce exposure to screens at least an hour before bed. 4. Watch Your Diet: Avoid heavy meals, caffeine, and alcohol close to bedtime. Use this time change as an opportunity to prioritize your sleep and, in turn, your heart health.

Stress and poor sleep can raise the risk of high blood pressure and heart disease. Most adults need 7-9 hours of sleep each night to give the heart and vascular system a much-needed rest. Meditation, relaxation therapy, or regular physical activity can help manage stress and boost sleep quality for those who struggle to get enough good quality sleep.
