New NIDDK-funded research in #ScienceTranslationalMedicine Science Magazine found that interfering with the growth of inflammatory immune cells could represent a therapeutic opportunity for rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and other inflammatory diseases. In mouse models of inflammatory arthritis, inhibiting cyclin-dependent kinase 7 (CDK7) - a key protein involved in cell growth - suppressed pro-inflammatory genes but not anti-inflammatory genes in macrophages, a type of immune cell. In patients with RA, CDK7 inhibition similarly reduced inflammatory gene signatures in samples taken from the synovium, the connective tissue that lines the inside of joints. These findings suggest CDK7 inhibitors may have clinical implications in RA treatment.

National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) reposted this
NIMHD Director Dr. Eliseo J. Pérez-Stable and National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) Ethnicity and Health, Diabetes, Endocrinology, & Obesity Branch Chief Dr. Anne E. Sumner were invited to plant a redwood tree at the University of Global Health Equity (UGHE) main campus in Butaro, Rwanda. The UGHE invitation honors the legacy of Dr. Paul Farmer, global health pioneer and UGHE founder and inaugural chancellor. The tree planting also recognizes Dr. Sumner’s role as the founding director of the NIH-Rwanda Health Program and Dr. Pérez-Stable's enduring support for the program. The NIH-Rwandan Health Program is an international collaborative effort to help build an NIH-trained research workforce in Rwanda. Under the program, physician fellows spend a year at NIH then return home as clinician scientists to conduct research and help improve health of Rwandans. The program contributes to research capacity building and workforce diversity. Learn more about it and its past fellows: https://bit.ly/4evRFNU #WorldDiabetesDay
