New web-based tool, developed by Dr. Eric Engels and colleagues, provides estimates that a colorectal cancer patient will not die from their cancer in the next five years, calculated both at the time of their cancer diagnosis and updated to accommodate the passage of time since their cancer diagnosis. The authors illustrate how these probabilities can inform organ transplant guidelines and help clinicians decide when it is safe to offer a transplant for individual patients with a history of colorectal cancer. https://lnkd.in/eQBBhCwt

A new lung cancer prediction model that includes genetic risk is poised to improve patient engagement and decision-making around lung cancer prevention. The international team of researchers, including Haoyu Zhang, was motivated by research suggesting that patients may be more likely to engage in cessation medication therapy and lung cancer screening when they are aware of their genetic risk for lung cancer. Importantly, the model was developed and tested using data from individuals from diverse genetic ancestries, leading to equitable and accurate risk assessments. It is being evaluated in two clinical trials to assess whether this personalized approach improves adherence to preventive healthcare and outcomes in primary care.
