Green Labs NL wins the I2SL: International Institute for Sustainable Laboratories Award! 🏆 Yesterday was the award ceremony of the 2024 I2SL Sustainable Laboratory Awards and we are very honored to have received the Award for Partnerships and Education. Florijn Dekkers and Joep Sprangers presented a few highlights of our ongoing projects: ➡ We supported over 15 Dutch institutes to implement the LEAF certification tool, which resulted in over 120 labs obtaining LEAF certificates and counting. The LEAF tool helps labs to reduce waste and energy usage and establishes best practice guidelines. 🌿 ➡ We organised an event to spark green movement in the landscape of scientific funders in the Netherlands, with support of Kenniscentrum Global Health (KCGH) ➡ We helped to develop interactive e-modules focused on data management, energy reduction, waste reduction, bias in science, and animal alternatives in research together with the UMC Utrecht. 🚨 Interested in making research and computing more environmentally friendly, and moving to Cambridge in the process? Now is the time! I'm very excited to be building a research group in Cambridge expanding the work of the Green Algorithms Initiative, thanks to the support of the Wellcome Trust. There are so many exciting things to do, so it's time to recruit! 🌱 We are looking for a diversity of backgrounds and expertise: 3 research roles, a Software Engineer Lead and a Community manager/project coordinator. The group has a strong commitment to making all tools available open access to the computing community. The Green Algorithms Initiative has received both nominations and awards for its contributions to environmentally sustainable research (e.g. HDR-UK Impact Award). Green Labs NL Goes to Paris! 🥐🇫🇷 This week, our team members —Joep Sprangers, Aram de Haas, Florijn Dekkers, Rolf Slaats, Thomas Freese, and Marit de Kort—traveled to Paris to attend the Labos 1point5 Sustainable Science Conference 🚄 🌍 We presented three posters and shared our work on "Just and Sustainable Science in Biomedical Education." WHO I AM I’m an experienced research professional specializing in cell biology, microbiology, and immunology. My strength lies in identifying knowledge gaps in projects, and finding ways to fill them by setting up appropriate assays, and connecting the right people to do so. 𝗔 𝗖𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝘁𝗼 𝗔𝗱𝘃𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗔𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗯𝗼𝗱𝘆 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗪𝗶𝘁𝗵𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗔𝗻𝗶𝗺𝗮𝗹 𝗨𝘀𝗲!  Earlier this year, the National Centre for the Replacement, Refinement and Reduction of Animals in Research (NC3Rs) highlighted a critical issue: the widespread use of animal-derived antibodies, which contributes to significant variability, reproducibility problems, and substantial resource waste.  To address these challenges, a collaboration with the Only Good Antibodies community was established. Together, they want to promote and advance the development of non-animal-derived-antibodies (NADAs), amongst others via various funding initiatives that support research. Our goals at the 3RCU align well with those of NC3RS, as we share a commitment to advancing alternatives that enhance research quality and that reduce reliance on animal derived materials.
