The role of men in promoting gender equality within Africa’s agri-food systems is essential and multifaceted. On one hand, there are male allies who actively advocate for inclusive policies, fully recognizing that the sustainability and growth of the agricultural sector rely on equitable access to opportunities, resources, and leadership for both women and men. These allies can play a crucial role in dismantling the structural barriers that women face. However, some men, often unconsciously, perpetuate gender disparities through cultural biases deeply rooted in traditional norms. Can men authentically champion gender equality without overshadowing the focus on women’s empowerment? How can we ensure their involvement supports and amplifies women's voices rather than dilutes them? Join us for the virtual #VALUE4HER #TalkCorner, at the intersection of International Men's Day and COP29’s Gender Day, as we explore these pivotal questions such as how men can support women in the agri-food systems, aligning with AGRA’s key advocacy issues. The panelist will debunk the importance of male allies in driving policy changes, breaking down cultural barriers, and supporting women in accessing the same opportunities and resources. Together, we can build a more inclusive and equitable agricultural sector, where both men and women can thrive. We look forward to your participation in this essential conversation. Here are the 6 key highlights from the Water, Food Systems, and Agriculture Day at COP29 Azerbaijan. 1. Baku Harmoniya Climate Initiative for Farmers: Launched by the COP29 Presidency and FAO, this initiative aims to support the transformation of agrifood systems by fostering collaboration, enhancing climate resilience, and promoting sustainable practices. 2. Reducing Methane from Organic Waste Declaration: This declaration targets emissions from landfills, which account for 20% of human-related methane emissions. Over 30 nations endorsed the initiative, emphasizing the dual benefits of using trapped methane as an energy source and reusing food waste as a protein source. 3. Climate Finance Discussions: A call for $1.3 trillion annually to address climate impacts was a major topic. Developing nations advocated for grants rather than loans to avoid exacerbating debt burdens, while developed nations pushed for private sector contributions. 4. AGRA's Call for Youth Investment: AGRA Board Chair Hailemariam Desalegn emphasized the need to invest in Africa's youth to develop climate-smart seeds and digital technologies, creating jobs and enhancing climate resilience. 5. Global Cooperation and Commitments: G20 leaders reaffirmed their commitment to transitioning away from fossil fuels, and the Australian government pledged AU$50 million to the Loss and Damage Fund, highlighting the importance of global cooperation in addressing climate challenges. 6. One year on from the launch of the Alliance of Champions for Food Systems Transformation, we are celebrating the progress made by member countries during Food, Agriculture and Water Day at COP29, inspiring others to follow their lead, and urging governments & financial institutions to deliver #climatefinance for #foodsystems. Government of Tanzania has now announced its intention to join the Alliance, and we very much look forward to seeing what they achieve in partnership with existing members. These highlights underscore the critical role of collaboration, innovation, and investment in building resilient food systems and addressing climate change. Lower nutrient levels in staple crops like wheat, rice, and maize can lead to widespread nutritional deficiencies, particularly in vulnerable populations.
