Specialization: The Most Underrated Form of Innovation!
Sometimes, innovation means resisting the urge to expand, to add, or to pivot.
Owning one area of expertise—mastering it completely—creates a powerful edge. In a dynamic, crowded market, genuine specialization is unmatched. The patience and dedication to stay focused may be uncommon, but they’re often the foundation of enduring success
In my experience, a key red flag in a business lifecycle is when companies overreach by adding products or services that dilute their specialty. I’ve seen it unfold in the fitness industry:
- When CrossFit shifted from an elite niche to a broad, mainstream appeal.
- When Flywheel (RIP) thought adding 1-2 lb weights made them more than a cycling brand.
- This year, we saw OTF (known for cardio) attempt a pivot toward strength training.
- Now, F45 plans to roll out infrared saunas and cold plunges nationwide—not entirely off-brand, but where? Most F45 locations barely have room for a lobby.
- Shit, even us at MADabolic (a strength-biased workout) once toyed with the idea of adding cardio-inspired classes on weekends.
Many would call this innovation. Others recognize it as a signal of desperation—or an overestimation of potential. Sometimes, these pivots are the kiss of death.
A ceiling in business can be an asset. Embracing your niche allows you to focus on the core customer who values what you do best. True, some change may be needed, but over-expanding risks alienating the very base that made you successful.
As I said: mastering one thing, and resisting the urge to chase everything, is a powerful form of leadership.
