#DYK Before GPS, satellites, lidar, and drones, cartographers relied on tools like the Gunter's Chain, a 66-foot-long chain with 100 links, for precise land measurement. 📷 Chainmen of the USGS measuring a baseline near Fort Wingate, New Mexico, 1883 #WorldGeographyWeek #GISWeek #GISDay #Geospatial #Cartography #GuntersChain

In a time before satellites and smartphones... there was the Iter Avto! 🗺 Iter Avto, the first in-car navigation device built in 1930, was loaded with routes printed on paper scrolls. It was hooked up to the car's speedometer, so the scroll would wind automatically in proportion to the distance traveled. The maps included upcoming road features, garages, hotels, etc. It’s amazing to see how far navigation technology has come since then! #WorldGeographyWeek #IterAvto #GISWeek #GISDay #Geospatial
