Welcome new 3Norther, Hannah Askey! Hannah’s passion for interior design was inspired by her love of art and painting, as well as her unique perspective on spaces from moving around the world. Each move taught her the power of transforming a house into a home, fueling her desire to create that sense of belonging for others. Drawn to 3North’s collaborative and interdisciplinary environment, Hannah appreciates the close connections that come with the firm’s small to midsize culture, making each project feel special. She believes in designing spaces that meet current needs while inspiring future possibilities. When she's not at work or chasing after her toddler, Hannah loves to garden, paint, and capture moments through photography—creatively connecting with the world around her is central to who she is. #3NorthSpotlightSeries #3NorthUnifiedDesign

We’re honored to be named “Small Business of the Year” at the HYPE ICONS Awards last night! As 3North celebrates 25 years, this recognition highlights our commitment to leadership, innovation, and shaping Richmond’s future through our Unified Design approach. Our work has transformed Richmond’s riverfront, with projects like the River Education Center, Great Shiplock Park, Canal Walk improvements, the Brown’s Island Master Plan, and the expansion of the American Civil War Museum. Now, with the Allianz Amphitheater at Riverfront underway, we are honored to be a partner in improving Richmond’s downtown and enhancing its skyline. Thank you to HYPE: Helping Young Professionals Engage and ChamberRVA, and congratulations to all the other finalists! #3NorthUnifiedDesign #HYPEICONS2024

We're thrilled to welcome one of our newest team members, Amy Martinez, to 3North! Drawn by the company’s reputation as a supportive and inspiring workplace, Amy’s favorite part about 3North is its peaceful and unified environment, where everyone values each other's contributions. With a passion for the details that keep everything running smoothly, Amy brings her talents in Office Coordination to enhance the experience for both colleagues and clients. Outside the office, she’s active in the Richmond community as a spiritual formation guide at Area 10 Faith Community, where she supports women on their personal journeys. Amy also treasures quality time with loved ones, finds serenity by the water, enjoys reading, and expresses her creativity through watercolor painting. #3NorthSpotlightSeries #3NorthUnifiedDesign

3North is excited to announce that our Lock Island Compound project has been recognized with a Citation Award by the AIA California Residential Design Awards program. The jury praised the project's thoughtful restoration of the Richard Neutra-designed house, highlighting the precision and care of the surgical interventions. Rather than merely replicating the original design, the approach sought to understand and extend Neutra's vision, seamlessly integrating new elements while honoring the integrity of the original work. #AIA #3NorthUnifiedDesign #3NorthHouses #3NorthSF

3North congratulates William & Mary’s Virginia Institute of Marine Sciences (VIMS) on receiving a transformational gift of $100 million from philanthropist Jane Batten to establish William & Mary’s Batten School of Coastal & Marine Sciences at VIMS. The newly named Batten School will expand current VIMSresearch and focus on addressing critical challenges faced by coastal communities worldwide, including sea level rise, increased storm intensity, flooding, and loss of agricultural land. In June 2023, 3North completed an Intangible Qualities (IQ) Charrette and Conceptual Design Study, establishing a vision for a range of improvements on the VIMS campus. Guided by visionary VIMS leadership, 3North conducted an extensive stakeholder engagement process and identified several campus improvements to better support the Institute’s ongoing work and further reflect its transformative vision for the future. The study highlighted the opportunity for the campus itself to become a catalyst with far-reaching internal and external impacts. We are thrilled that the Batten gift will help bring this vision to life. Proposed campus improvements include a renovated visitor center and new infrastructure designed to build community, serve the public with engaging educational opportunities, and present emerging solutions. Additionally, the study identified related landscape enhancements to improve campus connectivity and celebrate the dramatic riverfront location. The outcome of the campus transformation projects will include expanded opportunities to convene stakeholders and scientists around emerging solutions to coastal and marine challenges, and new opportunities to engage students, educators, policymakers, and the public. We are proud to contribute to the future of such a vital area of study and thrilled to be a part of the VIMSvision, now so generously supported by the Batten gift. Looking forward to seeing VIMS bring this vision into reality! Virginia Institute of Marine Science William & Mary

...And the 2024 Unified Design Summer Internship has concluded! Our talented interns -- Seneca Woods, Brynn McClatchy, and Anne Jennings showcased their Unified Design Exercise, integrating everything they've learned about architecture, interiors, and Intangible Qualities (IQ). They focused on The Armitage Building along Williamsburg Road, situated just below Church Hill and adjacent to Rockett’s Landing, separated by railway. This location presents a unique challenge as it could be the missing link connecting several nodes of Richmond’s cultural and commercial centers. During their presentation, the interns explored the building’s history and the associated Intangible Qualities. They then discussed the existing conditions, compared them with their proposed renderings, and concluded with a design concept for shielding the building’s front from the busy street. Their final vision featured a bike shop/retail space, complete with a flood plan, considering the site's proximity to the James River. Cheers to another great summer! #3NorthUnifiedDesign

We are pleased to announce the Warm Springs Pools in Bath County, Virginia have been awarded Traditional Building Magazine's 2024 Palladio Award for Commercial Renovation and Restoration under 30,000 square feet. These structures are a nationally recognized cultural landmark and have been in use for over 200 years. Due to their steamy environment and challenging maintenance, these wooden pavilions required extensive attention to detail to make them operational again. They officially reopened to the public in December 2022 and their distinctive interiors may be seen in the photos above. Read more about this project below. For over 20 years the Palladio Awards have served as an annual ceremony that recognizes exceptional achievement in traditional design. The factors judged are refinement and appropriateness of the design, suitability of design in relation to the program and the project’s context, appropriate selection and use of materials, quality of construction and craftsmanship, and overall design excellence.
