Youth Engagement at IUCN

In 1956, the Union founded the International Youth Federation for Environmental Studies and Conservation, which united youth-led environmental organizations worldwide until the 1990s. Since then, and continuing today, IUCN has spearheaded youth-focused initiatives through its Programs, as well as through Resolutions from various IUCN Congresses and events.

Young people are the future, and their involvement is crucial in tackling the global challenges humanity faces today. We need their fresh perspectives, innovative ideas, and expertise. The IUCN has long recognized the importance of youth voices. The IUCN Youth Strategy builds on this strong foundation, guided by decades of policy that inspire IUCN Members, Commissions, and the Secretariat to advocate for youth involvement.

A 2020 review of Youth Engagement and Intergenerational Partnership across IUCN led to the production of the IUCN Youth Strategy. The Strategy provides a comprehensive framework for meaningful youth engagement, fostering collaboration between generations to reverse biodiversity loss, conserve nature, and manage natural resources sustainably

“The IUCN Youth Strategy acknowledges the importance of young people's energy, passion, and innovative potential. It builds on ongoing efforts to integrate youth perspectives across the Union, drawing from the vast experiences and knowledge of IUCN Members, Commissions, and the Secretariat.”

Additionally, it incorporates the insights from the IUCN Global Youth Summit 2021 and aligns with the IUCN Programme 2021–2025. The IUCN's commitment to youth dates back to 1956, and the Strategy is the latest step in a long history of youth-focused initiatives. Having been endorsed by all parts of the Union, IUCN urges all constituents to actively work towards its full implementation.

Implementation of the IUCN Youth Strategy

The historical launch of IUCN Youth Advisory Committee in April 2024 was preceded by multiple Union-wide efforts aimed at youth empowerment, meaningful engagement and leadership. Recognizing the importance of better integrating youth into the IUCN, the Youth Strategy for 2022-2030 lays out strategies for increasing meaningful engagement of youth in IUCN’s policies, processes and programmes. The newly established Youth Advisory Committee was assembled to support the implementation of the IUCN Youth Strategy across the Union.
