I started my recruiting career in New York City. You'd think that recruiting construction in the biggest city in the country would mean tons of doors to pry open, but often it was exactly the opposite. What I learned early on was, the construction industry in NYC was huge...but also very small. Everybody knew everybody and the #1 way talent moved from one company to another was "my buddy called me and said they needed me". It was understanding this way of life that made me a better recruiter. Construction recruiting (well, all recruiting) is a "who you know" business. Always has been, always will be. And our value as recruiters is to know the best people and to connect them to others that are the best. So that just leaves one question: do we know each other? Job growth in Houston is slowing, with the city losing 13,100 jobs in the first seven months of the year, compared to the historical average addition of around 22,000 jobs annually. The primary losses have been in the trade, transportation, utilities, and government sectors. However, there are positive signs, such as major industrial leases, indicating potential for recovery. Additionally, the leisure, hospitality, and construction sectors are showing job gains, with increased hiring in food services and retail driven by post-pandemic consumer behavior and food delivery trends.

A quick placement..... A couple of weeks ago I finished up a successful placement of a high level construction executive in New York. The process took place over a period of 2 weeks from a phone call at 6:30pm to a first interview, to an offer and then an acceptance of the position. On the surface it looks like it was a very quick turnaround.....but the process really took 8 years. That's right......eight years. I have been connected with this talented individual since 2016 and we spoke about once a quarter over that time period. We developed a great relationship over that time period and I never try to move someone when they are truly happy with their role...it's a futile endeavor. In the end the process took over 40 phone conversations over 96 months. Relationship building is the most important part of this business and it often takes a long time but in the end it is worth it! #recruiting #construction

When it comes to putting together position descriptions and evaluating candidates, hiring managers have to deal with one of the biggest debates in the construction industry: should they require a college degree for the position? The ongoing labor shortage and high retirement rates leave many hiring managers scrambling to find strong candidates for their open positions, and the pool gets even smaller when the position requires a four-year degree. Although the number of college graduates with degrees in construction is on the rise, it’s still much too low to compensate for the losses the industry has sustained from retirements and a reduced labor force.
