Business in the Community announced some interesting findings in their first annual Lifting up the UK: State of the Nation report last week. The research provided real insight into what CEOs and Board members from the UK’s 450 biggest companies are facing in an ever evolving and often uncertain business landscape. 📢 It’s clear to see that attracting and retaining talent scored high on a CEO’s agenda with 57% ranking it as one of the top three greatest challenges facing their business, 55% of CEO’s also cited technological acceleration as an uncertain challenge which presents both opportunity and risk. 📈 Knowing and then setting about how to solve the talent gaps for any organisation directly affects business growth, skills capability and competitiveness. 💡 The UK’s top leaders are committed to making business a force for good, investing in skills for the future and breaking down barriers to social mobility through responsible business practices. ⬆ It also acknowledges that being a truly purpose led organisation with an unwavering commitment to improving employee engagement increases loyalty, business performance and customers perception of value. 🚀 This cannot be tackled by the top 450 companies alone and there is a need for collaboration and meaningful action to be taken in all of society to fix some of the challenges we face in the workforce. 👩🎓 So when it comes to your own approach to talent retention, attraction and purpose there is a lot to learn from this report and the calls to action set out by the UK's leading CEOs. 💡Our Chair, Brendan Sarsfield, and Sarah Forster from our secretariat The Good Economy were at last week's Social Housing Finance Conference. They shared insights from our Adopter community into how the SRS has contributed to the sector's ESG performance, listened to what delegates had to say about the challenges and opportunities of ESG and sustainability reporting, and much more besides. We've summarised Sarah and Brendan's top takeaways from the day, including: ➡️ Data remains a significant challenge when it comes to Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) and sustainability reporting – but the payoff includes a better understanding of the business and ways to drive improved performance. ➡️ Telling the ‘social’ story needs to focus on people, purpose, and individual outcomes – data and KPIs are only part of the story. ➡️ Institutional capital driven by ESG and sustainable outcomes offers potential partnerships, but social housing will always need a form of subsidy. ➡️ ESG got a lot of support, with many talking about the benefits beyond finance, with the criteria helping Housing Associations improve their strategies and performance. Recent survey of 100 UK firms reveals that two-thirds of them already relocated or are planning to shift their investments to markets more aligned with sustainability goals. 💰 This represents a staggering £1 trillion in annual turnover and £200 billion in green investments. 👉 The reason? Unclear policies surrounding the transition to a low-carbon economy. Despite UK's reputation as a leader in sustainable finance, the UK Sustainable Investment and Finance Association (UKSIF) warns that inadequate support from policymakers is jeopardising its leadership position. Challenges such as the delayed implementation of the UK's green taxonomy and the lag in adopting global standards for corporate climate reporting underscore the pressing need for prompt action. Addressing these issues has the potential to attract substantial investment; failing to do so risks significant capital outflow. In the midst of the debate regarding London's status as a global financial hub, the Investor Forum acknowledges the shifting dynamics and the Review identifies 3 key issues which can contribute to a more vibrant and valuable capital market: ·      The need to reimagine stewardship ·      The importance of reconnecting the investment chain ·      The creation of an Investor and Issuer Forum The efforts to reform the market are beginning to take shape, and the proposed package of reforms is wide ranging. There is unlikely to be consensus around the value of all the proposed changes, but it is important that the very best ideas gain traction.
