Pride Month provides a moment to reflect on what has changed for all of us LGBTQIA people, and what still needs to be addressed. I am a gay person in a heterosexual world. It’s not always safe to be me. The challenges I have to overcome on a daily basis are plentiful. From off-handed remarks to downright rudeness, harassment and at times, violence. It happens to all of us—more than most heterosexual people know. I have never shown any form of public affection to my partner of over 20 years. I ask you to consider this for a moment. I’ve never publicly held my partners hand, kissed him on the cheek, I haven’t even hugged him. What message does that send to our children? It’s not a shame thing. I promise you. It’s a safety thing. I would love to live in a world where diversity is a virtue, and where everyone can live and love next to each other without hate. “Nathan, the world will catch up”. This statement of support from my nan (now in heaven) keeps me moving forward. If you’re an LGBTQIA person out there struggling with adversity, this is exactly what Pride is for: Be proud, be you, be as out and bold as you want to be, or blend in if that is your thing. April features Celebrate Diversity Month which recognizes the diversity of the world and is a time of understanding differences whether gender, sexual orientation, race, ethnicity, religion, or other factors. By taking time to appreciate these differences, April creates a time for a deeper understanding of those around you. At Carole Landis Foundation we help improve all lives. When shown compassion and empathy, and given the tools for empowerment, people can develop resilience and feel worthy. When you truly care about people in your community, apathy is no longer an option. Empathy creates action. Silence is a form of complicity. We need to speak up and get involved. Embracing Pride Month: Celebrating Progress, Acknowledging History, and Fostering Allyship As Pride Month unfolds, it's a time to celebrate the vibrant diversity of the LGBTQIA+ community and honor the courageous individuals and allies who have paved the way for progress. Embracing Pride goes beyond festivities; it's an opportunity to shed light on the historical struggle and to draw inspiration from those who have fearlessly championed basic human rights in the face of adversity. Reflecting on history, we are reminded of the relentless advocacy for equality that has taken place globally. This calls for profound acknowledgment of the unwavering resilience of the LGBTQIA+ community and their allies in the pursuit of fundamental human rights. It's a moment to recognise the pain and suffering endured, and to harness the lessons learned to fuel our commitment to do better. In today's world, the stark reality persists that many individuals still face disrespect and discrimination based on their identities. While we acknowledge milestones like the legalisation of same-sex marriage in orthodox religion-based countries, the cultural shift towards acceptance and inclusivity lags behind. This highlights the pressing need for sustained action to bridge this gap and cultivate a society where everyone's identity is respected and valued. Amidst the ongoing journey towards equality, allyship emerges as a powerful force for change. It's not only about visible support but also about driving transformation behind the scenes. By propelling the entrance of the LGBTQIA+ community into spaces where systemic change can be realised—be it political forums, cultural representations on screen, or global speaker platforms—allyship becomes an indispensable catalyst for progress. Drawing inspiration from the profound words in "The Boy, the Mole, the Fox, and the Horse": “I can't see a way through,” said the boy. “Can you see your next step?” “Yes.” “Just take that,” said the horse. I strongly believe that diversity is a strength, and that different perspectives and experiences lead to innovation and growth. It is the responsibility of all of us to create an open and supportive environment where everyone feels valued and accepted. Pride Month gives us the opportunity to show our commitment to diversity and inclusion and to express our solidarity with the LGBTIQ+ community. By celebrating the Pride Month, I am making a statement for a world where everyone deserves equal opportunities and recognition. I am aware that dealing with the topic is not always easy, and the fear of making mistakes may prevent a lighthearted approach to the topic. My experience has shown that it is very helpful to have an open dialogue, clarify questions and actively seek feedback. In this way, I become more confident in dealing with sensitive topics, can learn from mistakes and maintain a more relaxed approach. And especially with sensitive topics, it's important to remember that words and their meanings are in a social and cultural context. Even if I didn't mean something intentionally offensive, certain words or statements can be harmful because of their historical or social connotations. Therefore I try to be aware of my language use and how my words may be perceived and being open to feedback to recognize where I failed and take this as opportunity to learn and grow. This is one step that will help us grow together into an appreciative, inclusive and tolerant community. One, can never accept you for who you are, no matter how much you try to educate them. Second, will celebrate you, accept you and make you feel special for whoever you are. And third, this is my favourite part of the society, they don’t care who you are, where you are from, what’s your race is, what’s your sexuality is, what language you speak, or anything about you. They neither judge nor celebrate you. All they care is your intentions and honesty. And they only treat you according to that. Happy LGBTI+ Pride Month to all. This Pride Month, I want to emphasise the importance of allyship, both from within the community and from our allies. Advocacy is crucial not just when it's easy, but especially when it's hard. For those of us actively engaged in the community, we witness the shifting values and the fight for recognition. It is essential that we advocate for everyone's rights, not just our own identity. To me, Pride Month is a time to celebrate our authentic selves while educating others about the significance of our identities, including pronouns. Displaying my pronouns (He/Him) is a small but powerful act of solidarity for those who struggle to express theirs openly. It is also something everyone can do to show support. Recently, I have seen our transgender siblings facing severe attacks. We owe it to them to show unwavering support, not just during Pride Month, but every month. Showing support not just when it's easy, but also when it's hard is what allyship is all about. Unity is essential—if we don't walk together, we walk alone. In the professional workplace, being open about one's identity requires immense courage. And visible displays of advocacy and allyship are important to promote confidence. As we celebrate Pride Month, let's ensure our support is visible and unwavering, creating inclusive environments where everyone feels safe to be their true selves. Advocacy in the workplace should be proactive, making diversity and inclusion a lived reality. Together, we can foster a professional culture that values and respects all identities, enabling everyone to bring their whole selves to work every day.
