Neha rushed into the corporate canteen, late for lunch again. She quickly piled her plate with rice, curries, and naan, barely thinking. But halfway through her meal, she was full, and pushed her half-eaten plate aside. Just then, she noticed something that stopped her cold. Across the table, Ramesh, one of the cafeteria workers, stared at the wasted food. "Do you know," he said softly, "that in some places, children go to bed hungry while we throw away food every day?" His words hit Neha hard, and she felt a wave of guilt wash over her. She remembered her grandmother’s words, growing up: "Food is a gift, never waste it." That evening, Neha couldn’t shake the image of the uneaten food. The next day, she spoke to HR about implementing changes in the corporate canteen. Soon, posters were put up reminding employees to take only what they needed. Leftovers were collected and donated to nearby shelters. Similar initiatives took off in nearby restaurants, with smaller portion options and leftover food going to the needy. Neha realized that it wasn’t just about food. It was about the resources, the effort, and the lives behind each meal. How often do we carelessly waste what others desperately need? Let’s start small – by being mindful of our portions, supporting food donation programs, and spreading awareness. Together, we can make a difference. How are you helping to reduce food waste? 89% of the organisations we support say they expect to see an increase in demand for food services this year. 58% of organisation expect a significant rise in demand. This shocking statistics was reported in The Standard and comes from a survey of over 600 of our community organisations which shows that your support is needed more than ever. In 2023, we achieved so much – delivering the equivalent of 32M meals to those in need which is only going to rise if our surveys hold true. Hygiene insecurity and food insecurity go hand in hand. Hygiene products are often on a food shelf’s most needed items. There is a reason for that. Hygiene products receive no subsidies or purchasing support for nonprofits or low-income individuals and families. This means trade offs are being made and basic needs become competing needs. Support your local food shelves with hygiene products to support more basic needs. #hygiene4all

Founder of 3Pumpkins, Tak Takut Kids Club (TTKC). Usually found at the playgrounds, hawker centre and multi-purpose court in Boon Lay.
How is the food security issue in the community and the role that TTKC plays in this? This is another FAQ. There are many many issues on the ground, and we can’t (and shouldn’t) catch them all. TTKC has two key missions that help us focus our efforts: 1. Build a child-centric social network. This means that our efforts are in finding out who are the key players who can render effective help to resolve food shortages problem, rather than doing it ourselves. This happens when we hear of children speak of going hungry. From observations, sustainable donation of fresh food continues to be a lack. We especially advocate for eggs to be donated to households with young children. They are nutritious and almost never go to waste, and cost of eggs can be quite high if you have a couple of hungry mouths to feed in a household. Consistency and sustainability is a key. Because people need stability in their lives. Hence we tend to reject the ad-hoc donation drives. Our last collaboration with Ray of Hope and Local Farm took place over a good 10 months. 2. Motivate children towards self-actualisation. There are many scaffolding steps to this self-awakening piece, starting from making more conscious decisions. The fact is, we do see most children having small purchase power daily to buy snacks in the neighbourhood. This could be $2-5 a day. We also see “premium snacks” in the neighbourhood selling for $6.50 a pack and the children buying them. What this means is that the work is to empower the children and their peer network to make better food choices: from conscious budgeting, understanding nutrition, and making their own snacks! We see our work centralised on this. Pic: A gallery of rubbish collected in the vicinity of TTKC. There is another gallery that shows sanitary products, etc. Our community workers have been folding in routines to get the children to pick rubbish, observe and talk about consumption, waste and civic responsibility from here. We probably can’t get rawer data than this, lol!

"As companies reimagine both their office environments and employee experiences, they are recognizing the role of #food as a way to improve #culture, foster in-person interactions, and boost #productivity. " -Robin The questions: -'How much does this cost?' -'How does food impact the office?' -'Are you able to accommodate dietary restrictions?' -'What does the process look like if we want to order?' At HUNGRY, these questions are presented to us daily as more and more companies provide catering for their team. Each answer is slightly different from client to client but overall the consensus is, WE NEED FOOD AND WE NEED IT NOW!! Reach out if you're one of the many that need catering (Jamey@tryhungry.com) P.S. For every 2 meals you purchase, 1 is donated in your name to Feeding America #corporatecatering #missiondriven #companyculture #events

"𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐇𝐢𝐝𝐝𝐞𝐧 𝐒𝐭𝐫𝐮𝐠𝐠𝐥𝐞𝐬 𝐁𝐞𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐝 𝐄𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐲𝐝𝐚𝐲 𝐋𝐮𝐱𝐮𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐬" It’s easy to overlook the small luxuries we enjoy daily. From the clean water flowing from our taps to the abundance of food in our supermarkets, many of us live in a bubble of convenience. For countless others, these “ordinary” aspects of life are hard-won battles. Take a moment to reflect on some of these disparities and appreciate the privileges we often take for granted. 𝑪𝒍𝒆𝒂𝒏 𝑾𝒂𝒕𝒆𝒓: 𝑨 𝑷𝒓𝒆𝒄𝒊𝒐𝒖𝒔 𝑪𝒐𝒎𝒎𝒐𝒅𝒊𝒕𝒚 For many, turning on the tap and getting clean water is a given. Yet, in numerous parts of the world, access to safe drinking water is a daily struggle. Imagine having to walk miles every day just to fetch water for your family. This is a reality for many, highlighting the stark contrast between our everyday convenience and their daily hardship. 𝑬𝒅𝒖𝒄𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏: 𝑨 𝑮𝒂𝒕𝒆𝒘𝒂𝒚 𝒕𝒐 𝑶𝒑𝒑𝒐𝒓𝒕𝒖𝒏𝒊𝒕𝒚 Education is another area where disparities are glaring. While many children complain about school, millions of others dream of the chance to learn. In some regions, especially in conflict zones or impoverished areas, education is a luxury. For these children, education represents hope and a pathway to a better future, something many of us might take for granted. 𝑭𝒐𝒐𝒅 𝑺𝒆𝒄𝒖𝒓𝒊𝒕𝒚: 𝑴𝒐𝒓𝒆 𝑻𝒉𝒂𝒏 𝑱𝒖𝒔𝒕 𝒂 𝑴𝒆𝒂𝒍 The abundance of food in our supermarkets can make it easy to forget that food security is a significant issue worldwide. According to the Food and Agriculture Organization, nearly 690 million people are hungry. While we might worry about what to cook for dinner, others are concerned about whether they will have anything to eat at all. This disparity underscores the importance of appreciating the food on our tables and considering ways to help those in need. 𝑯𝒆𝒂𝒍𝒕𝒉𝒄𝒂𝒓𝒆: 𝑨 𝑳𝒊𝒇𝒆𝒍𝒊𝒏𝒆 𝒇𝒐𝒓 𝑴𝒂𝒏𝒚 Access to healthcare is another privilege that many take for granted. In many parts of the world, healthcare services are either too expensive or simply unavailable. For those living in such conditions, even minor illnesses can become life-threatening, a stark contrast to the healthcare access many of us enjoy. Recognizing these disparities is not about inducing guilt but fostering gratitude and empathy. Understanding the struggles others face, we can better appreciate our own privileges and perhaps be inspired to help bridge these gaps. Whether through supporting charities, advocating for policy changes, or simply spreading awareness, we can all play a part in making the world a more equitable place. What we take for granted, others have to struggle to achieve. Next - Prev - "𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐓𝐚𝐥𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐓𝐢𝐧𝐲 𝐓𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐬: 𝐒𝐥𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐯𝐬. Parents are the first call to action when it comes to food and their children's involvement. They play distinct roles in ensuring the children have proper understanding of food handling inorder to avert wastage by and promote healthy habits and lifelong skills. Try cooking, meal planning, and grocery shopping together. Assign age-appropriate tasks, such as setting the table or washing dishes. Foster teamwork, food awareness, and a positive relationship with food. You can also take them on excursion to food producing companies and large farms. Involving kids in food activities sparks appreciation and gratitude. They will develop a sense of ownership and connection to the meal. By exploring different flavors, they'll understand the effort and love that goes into putting food on the table. This hands-on approach teaches them to value food, reduce waste, and respect the process. As they grow, they'll cherish memories of quality time spent together in the kitchen, fostering a lifelong appreciation for the simple joys of sharing meals, as it's often said that “Charity begins in the home”. #TRASHNOT24 #RightToFoodNotToWaste #SustainableEating #ZeroWaste #ParentingForChange #WorldFoodDay2024

Having food on the table is a privilege not everyone has, and wasting food is a heinous act. In a world where having a meal is a luxury for many, wasting it is a significant issue that demands our attention. Let's take a moment to appreciate the abundance of food we often overlook and commit to being responsible stewards of our resources. Every bit of food we discard contributes to a global problem affecting both people and the planet. However, the good news is that we can make a difference. - Shop Smart: Plan your meals, create shopping lists, and purchase only what you need. - Embrace Leftovers: Get creative with leftovers, turning them into new dishes or freezing them for future use. - Educate Others: Share knowledge about the consequences of food waste and inspire positive change. - Support Local Initiatives: Contribute to local food banks or charities working towards reducing hunger. Let's turn awareness into action, expressing gratitude for what we have and working towards a world where no one goes to bed hungry. #FoodWaste #Sustainability #GlobalResponsibility #EndHunger #Gratitude #CommunityImpact #PetersonProjectsAndSolutionsMalaysia #TrustWellPlaced
