Pain management links back to almost every medical specialty. But despite new concepts and treatment approaches having developed over the last few years, there are many areas that haven't received much focus. The RSM Pain Medicine Section aims to remedy that with their next event, which will provide essential updates for the healthcare community on some of the novel discoveries changing the way we treat pain. We caught up with Dr Anish Thillainathan, Pain Medicine Fellow and Council Member on the Section, who is supporting lead event organiser Dr Roxaneh Zarnegar, Consultant in Pain Management and Associate Professor at UCL. "With this event we're looking to address those areas which many healthcare professionals have some awareness of, but would benefit from learning more about to improve their practice. We'll share the latest developments in new treatment approaches which offer alternatives to more conventional management strategies, such as VR for chronic pain rehabilitation, the link between pain and the microbiome, and hypnosis. The event also features a strong focus on psychology, exploring the placebo effect, and the perception of the passage of time and how that relates to pain. "Pain management is relevant to every specialty so this event will be useful to a range of healthcare professionals, but particularly to GPs, who see people living with pain every day, psychologists, physios, and anyone with an interest in IBS or other functional bowel disorders, who will benefit from increasing their understanding of the latest thinking in this rapidly evolving field." 'Pain management outside the box' takes place on Wednesday 16 October at the Royal Society of Medicine. With speakers including Ruth Ogden Felicity Bishop Matthew Brown Deepak Ravindran Gillian Chumbley Anju Jaggi #painmedicine #painmanagement Tickets available: https://rsm.ac/3zWOkZB

🌟 Exciting advancements in pain management were on full display at this year’s PAINWeek conference in Las Vegas, where over 1,400 professionals gathered to explore the latest innovations in the field. One major highlight? The first-ever track dedicated entirely to psychedelic medicine in pain management! 🌿💊 From chronic low back pain to migraines, fibromyalgia, and even traumatic brain injuries, psychedelics like psilocybin, MDMA, and LSD are being explored as new options for treatment-resistant conditions. Personal stories from patients like Joe McKay and Court Wing, who found life-changing relief through psychedelics, were backed by clinical data, showing real promise in this space. It was an honor to be part of the discussion! I had the privilege of presenting The Foundations of Psychedelic Medicine, outlining the history, current research, and therapeutic potential of these substances. We are truly at the cusp of a new era in pain management. Attorney Deborah Linden Saly highlighted key legal considerations as states begin to explore psychedelic policy, and harm reduction specialist Erica Siegal offered strategies to minimize risks and enhance outcomes for patients. Erica Siegal did an incredible job highlighting effective harm reduction strategies as well as opportunities to attend training programs for healthcare practitioners in the world of psychedelic medicines. The growing interest in psychedelics for pain management is undeniable, and it was inspiring to see so many healthcare professionals eager to learn and ask thoughtful questions. As we continue to expand the conversation around psychedelic education, I’m hopeful this innovative approach will transform how we think about treating chronic pain in the U.S. 🙌 As always, thank you to the great team at PAINWeek and especially Carli Rowe, MHSM for putting together an incredible + impactful conference. I look forward to next year! #PAINWeek #Psychedelics #PainManagement #HealthcareInnovation #PsychedelicResearch #HarmReduction #MedicalEducation #addiction

APICO Pain Management, President 🔹 Double-Board Certified in Pain Management and Anesthesiology 🔹 Lecturer 🔹 Keynote Speaker 🔹 Business Consultant
When I'm doing my office paperwork after seeing my patients, I think about new ways I can help manage their chronic pain. I am deeply committed to exploring #InnovativeTreatments that can enhance your well-being. One such promising approach I've explored and now offer my patients is Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) therapy. PRP therapy utilizes components of your own blood to potentially support the body's natural healing processes. The procedure involves drawing a small amount of your blood, which is then processed to concentrate the platelets. These platelets contain growth factors, proteins that play a key role in the body’s healing mechanisms. The concentrated PRP is then injected into the area of concern. This method aims to harness your body's intrinsic healing capabilities. For those dealing with chronic pain, PRP therapy is considered a complementary treatment option. The goal is to support the repair of damaged tissues and reduce discomfort. PRP therapy is viewed as an approach that addresses the underlying issues rather than merely #ManagingSymptoms, providing a more sustainable option to find a path to relief. It's important to approach each treatment plan with personalized care. I believe that understanding your unique needs and circumstances is crucial to finding the most effective solutions. At APICO Pain Management, my priority is to provide compassionate care and explore various therapies, including PRP, to help you achieve a better quality of life. Remember, each patient's experience with PRP therapy can vary, and it’s essential to discuss all treatment options with me to determine the best plan for your specific situation. Your journey to improved well-being is my top priority, and I am here to support you every step of the way. “Pain doesn’t belong on a scale of zero to 10.” Excellent essay by ED physician and journalist Elisabeth Rosenthal with chronic pain in The Atlantic magazine. Calling all innovators, we have long known that pain scores as the 5th vital sign have not changed access to the pain care our patients deserve — or allow them to feel believed and heard. New acute and chronic pain biomarkers, objective measurement tools, and digital solutions are greatly needed to provide a more personalized approach to pain care. We do know that the brain in pain lights up differently in fMRI studies, but this isn’t practical or economical to proving pain in the “real world.” What are those biomarkers and pain phenotypes, not a scale of zero to 10, that can help guide pain assessment and treatment? Though other subjective functional scales are useful and today’s gold standard in pain medicine, research, and monitoring, they are still flawed. And yet that’s primarily what we’ve got, for now… Thank you Javid Muhammedali for sharing! #chronicpain #medicalinnovation #painmanagement American Academy of Pain Medicine, Trent Emerick, MD, MBA, Bryan Marascalchi, Sharon Kneebone, IOM, FASAE, CAE, Jennifer Hah, Theresa Mallick-Searle, Jeremy A. 💚🌿 Explore New Horizons for Non-drug Pain Management 🌿💚 In the quest for new, effective strategies for pain relief, green light therapy has emerged as a promising non-opioid option. So, how does green light work? Research suggests that green light can modulate chemicals in the brain related to pain perception, thereby helping to ease pain. Early studies have found that green light therapy can reduce chronic pain, #anxiety, and #depression in patients with #migraines and #fibromyalgia, while also improving sleep. This non-pharmaceutical approach to pain management shows immense potential. Health science researchers at the University of Arizona are further investigating green light therapy, a hopeful non-opioid option for pain relief. Their goals include reducing the need for opioids, mitigating the impact of the opioid epidemic, and decreasing hospital stays and complications due to uncontrolled pain. We look forward to further research in this promising new field and anticipate its revolutionary impact on pain management.💚🌿 Source: https://bit.ly/3VQhWz3 #GreenLightTherapy #NonPharmaceutical #PainManagement #HealthScience #OpioidCrisis #RevolutionInPainManagement #ChronicPainRelief #MigraineRelief #FibromyalgiaTreatment #SleepImprovement #NonOpioidOption #HealthInnovation #FutureOfMedicine #NaturalTherapies

🔍 Study Highlights: Patient Preferences in Postoperative Pain Management 🔍 Authored by Natalie Baxter, Hoyune Cho, JESSICA I. BILLIG, Sandra V. Kotsis, Steven C. Haase, and Kevin Chung, this important study explores what factors patients prioritize when managing pain after elective surgeries. 📊 Key Findings: ➔Patients rated the risk of addiction (26.3%) and amount of pain relief (25.6%) as the most important factors. ➔Other considerations included side effects (13.9%), functional independence (11.8%), and trust in the prescriber (11.4%). ➔Cost (7.9%) and stigma (3.1%) were the least influential factors in decision-making. 🎯 Takeaway: Patients favor pain management plans that maximize relief while minimizing addiction risks. Incorporating these preferences can reduce postoperative opioid prescriptions and lead to better outcomes. 🔗 Earn 1.0 CME: https://lnkd.in/djCXbyYA #Healthcare #PainManagement #PostSurgeryCare #OpioidSafety #MedicalResearch #CME #PatientCare
