🌍 World Patient Safety Day 2024: "Get it Right, Make it Safe!" 🩺 At Global Surgery Amsterdam, we are dedicated to improving patient safety through timely, effective care, especially in burn treatment and open fracture trauma care. These conditions demand rapid, accurate diagnosis to prevent complications and long-term disability. Globally, burn injuries claim over 180,000 lives each year, primarily in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Trauma is similarly devastating, with injuries being the leading cause of death and disability among people under 45. In LMICs, the impact is often worsened by a lack of trained healthcare workers, leading to delays or errors in diagnosis and treatment. This year’s World Patient Safety Day theme, “Improving Diagnosis for Patient Safety,” aligns closely with our mission. In many LMICs, the shortage of skilled healthcare professionals can mean the difference between life and death. That’s why we are dedicated to training health workers to “Get it right, make it safe,” equipping them with the knowledge needed for quick, accurate assessments and effective care. Let’s work together to improve patient safety and surgical outcomes globally by tackling diagnostic challenges, especially in low-resource settings. By focusing on the training and education of healthcare workers, we can strengthen diagnostic accuracy and ensure that patients receive the timely, life-saving care they deserve. #WorldPatientSafetyDay #PatientSafety #GlobalSurgery #BurnCare #TraumaCare #GetItRightMakeItSafe #LMIC

Always on the look out for things relevant to understanding the work of #districthospitals #firstreferralhospitals so good to see that some standard surgical and anaesthesia indicators proposed. Our experience a few years ago was that getting data on hospital surgical ward admissions and deaths from national health information systems showed large amounts of missing data. There were also problems with inpatient statistics because they count diagnoses so that if you have two diagnoses you may appear in statistics for a facility twice - and may in fact die twice according to the data! So lets advocate for more support for high quality routine health information so we can begin to properly understand the quality and outcomes of care. https://lnkd.in/eUsMytJV

When it comes to inpatient consults, a portable, compact system that facilitates straightforward documentation makes the job go smoothly. That explains why all the residents surveyed in a recent study described the Ambu® aScope™ 4 RhinoLaryngo Slim paired with the Ambu® view™ 2 Advance HD monitor, as “easy” or “very easy” to use. Plus, their patients rated the single-use scopes higher for understanding both their illness and the treatment rationale. Want to learn more? ER Physician Helping Dementia Family Caregivers Achieve Peace of Mind in Their Decisions | Educator, Speaker & Advocate | Let's Connect and Build a Positive Network
We all fall into one of these 3 goals of care categories. 1 – Full treatment Maximum medical treatment until it fails. Includes having CPR and being put on a ventilator. Your person can have this goal even if they value the quality of their life over the length of their life. When their quality-of-life (QoL) would no longer be acceptable to them, their goal can be changed. 2 – Some, but not all A very common goal for those living with dementia. People in this group value QoL over length of life. They are often OK with treatments that serve mainly to prolong their life, but not all, and not indefinitely. They often want the chance of receiving critical care to see if they will recover or perhaps maintain their current QoL. Many people naturally move into this group when the decision is made that they would not want to have CPR. People with this goal who do not want CPR and have a DNR form, can still have every other medical treatment, including medications, surgeries, and critical care interventions. 3 – Comfort This category is often misunderstood. Comfort, as an overall goal, does not mean the person will not receive care. When someone has this goal every treatment, procedure, surgery, or medication needs to have the underlying intention to first provide comfort. Yes, people who want their care to be focused on comfort can still have procedures and surgery. For example, repair of hip fractures is often performed because it helps control pain. There are people who are diagnosed with dementia who verbalize to their friends and family their wish to not receive treatments which would serve mainly to keep them alive and prolong their life. Many of those people would fall into this group. What quality of life means to your person and their value of QoL vs length of life is how you will determine their overall goal of care. Every medical decision we make on their behalf will be guided by this goal. If you do nothing else for your person, please identify their goal of care and when it might need to change. #GoalsOfCare #QualityOfLife #AdvanceCarePlanning
