BREAKING: Hurricane Helene’s impact has gone beyond the East Coast —Arizona hospitals are facing a critical IV fluid shortage due to the flooding at Baxter International’s North Carolina facility, the leading IV fluid producer in the U.S. ArMA member Dr. Purvi Parikh spoke with 12News | KPNX-TV on the situation: “The plant aims to resume operations this week, but even then, it’s uncertain [how quickly] they’ll meet the high demand,” said Dr. Parikh. With no backup reserves, the U.S. is relying on international shipments of fluids, which were approved by the FDA in response to the shortage. Happy posthumous 100th Dad! In 3 days, my Dad would have turned 100 - still managed to rack up 90 years on this earth. Anzac Day is always a good reminder of the sacrifices he made, which I always like to share. Reading through his log, I spent some time researching Operations 12 and 13 of the war - October 14 1944. As a pilot, they were privy to briefings of operations away from the rest of the base and crew, to avoid any leaks. This date is infamous for being what was called Operation Hurricane - a 24-hour Allied bombing operation, executed to demonstrate the overwhelming air superiority of the Allied Forces over Germany, particularly aimed at causing disruption and demoralisation in the densely populated Ruhr region. The operation commenced at first light on October 14th, after no heavy bombers had operated for the previous 48 hours. A formidable fleet of 1,013 aircraft, comprising 519 Lancasters, 474 Halifaxes, and 20 Mosquitos, escorted by RAF fighters, targeted Duisburg. The attack resulted in the dropping of 3,574 tons of high explosives and 820 tons of incendiaries. This strategic raid was aimed at causing mass panic, disrupting communications, and underscoring the futility of continued resistance by the Germans. Dad and his crew were one of a few that were instructed to fly both day and night as part of the campaign, hence the two sorties. This particular campaign caused some angst on base. 32 ops was when he (at 21 yo) and his crew could hang up their wings. ________________ My admiration for a kind, brilliant man and a life well lived: 1. After the war, he battled and survived tuberculosis, which resulted in the loss of a lung. 2. His studies in medicine were interrupted by severe depression following his brother's suicide, and his own suicide attempt. 3. Overcoming adversity, he became a respected doctor, providing free care to Aboriginal communities in Bateman's Bay. 4. Bill experienced personal tragedy with his first wife’s severe schizophrenia and hospitalisation. They had one son, John. 5. He co-founded Douglass Laboratories, which evolved into Australia's leading pathology practice, Douglass Hanly Moir. 6. Tragedy struck again when his second wife died in a tragic accident. 7. He mentored Colin Laverty, who established Laverty Pathology. 8. Later in life, Bill married again (my mother) & had four children. 9. He then built one of Australia's largest private horse racing enterprises, with hundreds of racehorses trained out at Mulgoa (we spent a lot of time on racetracks!). 10. John, Bill's first son and my half brother, would unfortunately take his own life when he was 21. 11. At 65, due to in part poor investing and a property developer's fraud in Singapore, he declared bankruptcy and lost everything. He was forced to rebuild his career, with the help of strong friendships and supporting doctors and hospitals. 12. He retired at 81 as a celebrated figure in pathology. In the wake of the devastating flooding caused by Hurricane Helene this September, communities and their healthcare systems continue to be impacted at a local and national level. Baxter’s North Cove facility in North Carolina, the lead manufacturer of IV solutions in the United States, has stopped production due to the significant flooding from Hurricane Helene. The Region 1 RDHRS is sharing resources from national organizations, as well as identified practices from hospitals currently responding to the supply chain disruption, which are designed to help facilities with conservation and mitigation strategies. These resources are not intended to be recommendations, advice or medical guidance and do not represent any specific endorsement but are being offered to healthcare systems to review, consider, and adapt as they see fit as they develop their own response plans.
