And urging the industry to use it. Patagonia REI and others, as values-aligned industry leaders who have been pioneers in open-sourcing your innovations, we ask you to take our IP and use it. We challenge you to #amplify and #accelerate our impact. Make it an industry norm, not an exception. You have the scale, reach, and means to do it. We are acutely aware that as a small and niche brand (in the torrents of the most volatile retail climate in our time ) we can’t do this alone. As an industry, we have to propel these ideals forward. This can only happen if we use our imaginations and do it together. We know this will not be a quick fix. It is not supposed to be. It is about taking a stand for a long-term vision, and doing what is in our power to achieve it. It does not bring back the millions of acres of lost forests, or swaths of biodiversity going extinct by the day. This does not halt the suffering and destruction ever present around us. But what it does try to do is forge a collective path forward, recognizing just how much our economies, and the consumption of simple everyday products, can play a vital role in maintaining, and creating, the global and fragile interconnected ecosystems within which we live. planaria behaviours #11 - Finisterre 🏄♂️ Riding the Waves of Innovation: The Finisterre Story🏄♀️ We had the pleasure of seeing Tom Kay speak at yesterday's hashtag #FutrEurope2024 conference so it seemed only fitting to feature his brand, Finisterre as the latest business in our planarian behaviours series. It all started just over 20yrs ago in the quaint Cornish town of St. Agnes, with a singleminded vision to design functional products for those who share a love of the sea. Products, like their first fleece, designed specifically for cold water surfers, tapped into a niche that was largely overlooked by the dominant players at the time. Why Finisterre Stands Apart: Sustainability at its core: Finisterre's commitment to ethical practices and environmental stewardship isn't just a part of their business model - it is their business model. They’ve set the bar high with innovative products like pioneering Yulex wetsuits (made from natural tree rubbers as opposed to traditional non-eco neoprene), pushing the industry towards more sustainable practices. Accessibility and advocacy: Recognising that some of their products come at a premium, due to the ethical manufacturing processes (see Yulex above), last year the brand launched a wetsuit rental programme to extend access to the brand. Innovation meets functionality: Their products go beyond aesthetics, offering functionality that meets the demanding needs of outdoor enthusiasts while ensuring minimal environmental impact. Reimagining supply chains: With a focus on quality and comfort, Merino wool is used for its natural ability to keep people cool and warm depending upon the weather. Originally sourced overseas, the brand partnered with local farmer Leslie supporting her to increase her flock 10-fold to meet their needs. Community and experience: Beyond apparel, Finisterre fosters a community. With events and initiatives like beach clean-ups, they’ve built a brand that’s a platform for advocacy and activism in environmental stewardship and community engagement. As seen in the launch of the Sea7 initiative to coincide with the G7 Summit coming to Cornish shores in 2021. Services that enhance experiences: Their expansion into services like surfboard rentals and repair not only complements their apparel but enriches their customers' outdoor experiences, enhancing both satisfaction and loyalty. Finisterre is not just selling clothes; they’re promoting a lifestyle aligned with adventure and sustainability. As they continue to innovate and expand, their commitment to the planet and its people remains unwavering.
