We are honored to feature prominently in The Publish Press's coverage of how Creators are gaining prominence in Hollywood, not by selling TV shows to networks or streamers, but by financing, distributing, and marketing their own. Rhett & Link's upcoming limited series Wonderhole (debuts August 23rd on YouTube!) signals Mythical's deepening investment in the thesis that Creator-led entertainment is an essential element of Hollywood's future growth. Implied in this very insightful article is that the industry will need to shrink in order for the cash to flow towards positivity. If Netflix is the de facto first choice for people who stream, effectively consumers are paying a higher subscription price for their second choice service. That is a recipe for concentration or a return to 3rd party sales for Media and Entertainment companies that want to live another day.
Many Hollywood executives and filmmakers have begun to wonder if their industry is entering permanent decline. The movie business is struggling to recover from the pandemic and labor stoppages. Cable TV is collapsing. The number of new shows being produced is falling for the first time in years. But this pessimism misses the bigger picture. The amount of time and money people spend on entertainment has never been higher -- and is still growing. The challenge for any artist or executive is the same as ever. You need to figure out how to put your work in front of people and profit from it. For next month's issue of Bloomberg Businessweek, I wrote the case for optimism in Hollywood. https://lnkd.in/g8NUy7Pv

Liquid Death are taking an entertainment-first strategy to a new level. They're launching a TV show. The news came out a few weeks ago, and I'm surprised I haven't seen much talk about it yet. Maybe people think it's parody. It's definitely not. It's the latest example of a growing trend in branded entertainment. It used to be that the only way for brands to enter TV or film was through product placement. Brands like Calm, Nike and now Liquid Death have changed that. In fact, branded entertainment even has its own category at Sundance Film Festival. As it becomes harder to reach customers conventionally, branded entertainment earns mental availability instead. We yearn for even 10-second views through rates. How about 30 minutes? I've written a lot about how Liquid Death have built their team to make ideas like this commonplace. Founder Mike Cessario actually used to work on promos for Netflix, so this feels full circle. What's even better is that this big bold move started as a small bet. First, with the creation of the Thirst Murderer character, then with small flip book style cartoons posted as Instagram Carousels (I posted one of my faves in the comments). Not everyone can be Liquid Death but everyone can adopt the framework they use to earn Share of Voice. #entertainment #marketing

Surprised? CONCERNED?? Although no surprises, as production is down everywhere (although it seems to be rebounding more outside of the U.S., e.g., Canada, the UK and Australia. Acknowledging Governor Newsom is doing all he can (given the political climate, and budgetary issues & concerns) Los Angeles and California will face further competition from Illinois (as announced last week, Illinois now allows National Talk Shows, (‘Jimmy Kimmel’ Live – note, ‘The Tonight Show’, ‘The Drew Barrymore Show’ and “The Kelly Clarkson Show” – have already moved to NY because of incentives), Game Shows (e.g., ‘Jeopardy’ and ‘Wheel of Fortune’) and Contest Shows (e.g., “American Idol” and ‘America’s Got Talent’). Talk Shows, Game Shows and Contest Shows do not qualify for the California incentive. Also, NJ Governor just signed a new bill, further enhancing the NJ incentive – reviewing the Bill now and will summarize and share ASAP. Also noting, there was pending legislation in other states (e.g., Oklahoma - while it didn’t pass in Oklahoma this year, Oklahoma will try again to incentivize live tv/episodic television (still LA/CA’s bread & butter!!! Hollywood is getting back to work after the twin labor strikes shut down most of production last year — but it's more risk-averse than ever, and even A-listers are getting snubbed. I surveyed producers, lawyers, and agents about what's getting greenlit and what's not in today's austere climate, and what makes a show "undeniable." #streamingwars #hollywood #tvproduction #netflix Check out my story in Business Insider:

This is a story! The same thing happened with Terrifer 2, but this is on another level. As a horror junkie it’s amazing to see the slasher genre turn this kind of profit and bring people to the theaters. Low budgets, big profits! Got to love Art the clown! #terrifer3 #movies #bigbusiness #movies #marketing #strategy
Ultra-gory 'Terrifier 3' is using puking viewers as a marketing tool. The same hype helped 'Terrifier 2' make $15 million on a $250,000 budget.

Creating movies that are driven by audience interest? What are your thoughts about that? We have been hearing, via various podcasts, to be honest, listening to the interviews in The Bigger Picture Podcast, that creators and studios are not really listening to their audience when it comes to creating content. Whether it is in movies, TV shows, theatrical releases, or for streaming. Is that the reason why so many productions flop (are not successful)? When Sony decided to go into production with Madame Web, we were really looking forward to what they would bring. Considering they did not have a great track record with Marvel Characters from the Spider-Man comics, such as Morbius and the second Venom. (The Into the Spider-Verse series is a exeption) The audience was not waiting for a Madame Web movie. Still, they delivered and what do you know... the movie flopped... big time. So... in what capacity should creators listen to their audience? You don't have to take in everything they are yelling towards you. However, it can work out for the better. Just look at what happened when the audience saw the first design of Sonic, The Hedgehog. We think, with some IPs, you should listen to the audience and look at what you can incorporate into your vision. It does not mean it will no longer be your movie, but some details will work out for the better. Let's talk about it! #movies #audience #filmmaking #tvshows #streaming Netflix NewBe ROYALNIFTY Sony Pictures Entertainment Warner Bros. Video editor | Helping entrepreneurs and business owners to build a Strong Personal Brand | Generated over 5M+ views for my clients
stop using boring stock videos (it is making your brand cheaper) Instead use clips from famous movies or tv shows, for example in your video if you are talking about making money than instead of using this boring footage that no one recognize, use this movie scene of the wolf of wall street, because its easily recognizable for the viewer and builds emotion to video. so you might wondering where should i find these videos? well just comment the word movie and i will send the link in your dms

This is Adam Conover - some marginally successful TV personality with a show that ran on truTV until it was cancelled on 2019 - telling the Animation Guild that the studios are greedy and secretly hate them and have nothing better to do than figure out how to immiserate them. This is being sent around game circles because “workers of the world unite”. It’s easy to fall into the trap of thinking that it’s all evil greedy executives but look around. We’ve had a 30% increase in the dollar, it’s crushed disposable income, and people don’t have the money for entertainment the way they did in the pre-pandemic. And the transition to streaming and the twin demise of the box office and cable have really disrupted the business. The studios are being sold and the execs laid off if it’s any consolation. And games is in a much similar post-ZIRC/stimmy check funk. What I know for a fact is that people who fall for this demoguagery are going to find that the jobs move elsewhere and their studios close. You’re not going to get studios to not use AI, and if they do, those who don’t take the pledge will eat their lunch. But you don’t even need to go there. You know what an animator in the Philippines costs? American talent in some cases is higher quality but not always. If the audience is the West, then we have the advantage of being in the culture. But increasingly distribution is global are we are very expensive relative to just about everywhere else. Guys like this get paid to talk and organize. If that’s what you want to do, follow your bliss, but that’s not making content. Those who actually want to make content need to figure out how to attract investment, and it ain’t like this!
