Fertilizer situation in Africa: An anatomy of a wicked situation. 7-9 May marks the AU initiative -Africa Fertilizer and Soil Health summit in Kenya. The fertilizer situation in Africa faces daunting tasks that the "Wicked situation" frame is quite fitting. The term wicked situation refers to a complex, open ended and unpredictable situation.(Alford & Head 2017) So where is this wickedness you ask ? -Wicked situation is that in 2006 the AU drafted the Abuja declaration calling to raise fertiliser application from 8kg / ha to 50kg/ ha in 10 years. However 18 years later it is estimated at 22kg/ha . This is 7 times less than the world average of 146kg/ha - Wicked situation is that Africa produces 30 million metric tonnes of fertilizer which is twice it's consumption. Yet Sub Saharan Africa imports 90 % of it's fertilizer requirements from outside the continent.(https://lnkd.in/dMW9-BQu) - Wicked situation is that the 90% imports referred to above have been affected by the Ukraine -Russian conflict resulting in fertilizer prices going up 3 times. Prices remain unstable at the moment. Other supplying countries have also put restrictions to protect their own farmers. -Wicked situation is that despite government subsidies in Africa and donor support, Africa has not managed to attain the Abuja declaration target nor solved its food security situation. - Wicked situation is that of the 90% imported fertilizer up to 36% of the harvest is lost to poor post harvest storage. Implying more fertilizer equals more rot and contamination. Not to mention all the emissions from the lost fertilizer as William Lanier would say. -Wicked situation is that after applying this fertilizer costing 3 times more, the greater part of Southern Africa is affected by a drought. - Wicked situation is that due to poor fertilizer application rates, the soils are not able to withstand impacts of climate change such as increased rain erosivity . This makes them sucseptible to erosion and poor yields. The poor soils will also have less capacity to absorb atmospheric carbon. So back to the fertilizer summit and more targets for the next 10 years. I think the conversation on fertilizer cannot succeed without also focusing on rot. Let's see what comes out from this summit.
