Secretary, Department of Science & Technology. On Lien from Professor, Department of EE, IIT Bombay. Former Director, IIT Kanpur.

A milestone was achieved today with the launch of the Operation Dronagiri as a pilot project as part of the implementation of the National Geospatial Policy. National Geospatial Policy 2022 was launched by Department of Science and Technology, Government of India to liberalize the geospatial sector and promote innovation. Geospatial Data Promotion and Development Committee (GDPDC) as an apex level national body is overseeing the programs for promotion of geospatial sector. As a pilot, the first phase of Operation Dronagiri will be implemented in five districts in five states (Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Assam, Andhra Pradesh & Maharashtra) to showcase the potential applications of integration of geospatial data and technology in three sectors --Agriculture, Livelihoods, Logistics and Transport. Industries, Corporates and Startups will be partnered with in this phase. The program has been conceptualized by GDPDC under the chairmanship of Shri Srikant Sastri. Integrated Geospatial Data Sharing Interface (GDI) developed at IISc Bengaluru will provide access to spatial data via APIs. GDI built with advanced data exchange protocols and privacy-preserving features, enables seamless data sharing, access, and analysis, which empowers organisations to make data-driven decisions for the public good, fostering innovation and responsible use of geospatial data. A Grand Challenge was also announced in which startups will be selected and supported in developing Proofs of Concept (POCs) that address specific problems within the designated sectors. Teams from IIT Tirupati Navavishkar I-Hub Foundation (IITTNiF) and the Geospatial Innovation Accelerators (GIAs) at Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur, Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay, Indian Institute of Management, Calcutta and Indian Institute of Technology, Ropar will also be part of the program. Shri Hitesh Kumar S. Makwana IAS, Surveyor General of India ; Prof. Satyanarayana Kalidindi, Director, IIT Tirupati; and representatives from corporate, public sector, startups , academia and Department of Science and Technology, Government of India attended the event. It’s exciting to witness the launch of Operation Dronagiri a clear testament to how #India’s National Geospatial Policy is setting the stage for innovation. By focusing on Agriculture, Livelihoods, Logistics, and Transport in this pilot phase, the initiative is unlocking new opportunities for data-driven growth across these crucial sectors. The partnership with institutions like Indian Institute of Science (IISc) IIT Tirupati Navavishkar I-Hub Foundation and others is particularly promising, as it brings together the best minds to create impactful, real-world applications. With the Integrated Geospatial Data Sharing Interface (GDI) enabling secure and seamless data access, it’s encouraging to think about the transformative decisions that can be made for the public good. The Grand Challenge for startups is another powerful move, allowing emerging innovators to play a key role in tackling sector-specific challenges. It’s amazing to see the emphasis on collaboration between the public sector, corporates, and academia, which is essential for a robust geospatial ecosystem in India. Hats off to everyone involved in Operation Dronagiri! It feels like we’re at the beginning of something truly transformative for India’s geospatial sector.

"It's a commendable initiative and achievement that the DST Secretary, Abhay Karandikar, actively engages in daily updates and activities. However, while researchers work tirelessly day and night in the lab, thousands of scholars in prestigious institutions continue to face persistent challenges in their research routines, including harassment, irregular fellowship disbursements, and age restrictions for scientific positions. #Harassment #IrregularFellowships #AgeLimitForScientists"

This is one of the best developments in the geospatial ecosystem of the country - unlocking the content available with various data creators and making it accessible in a seamlessly integrated manner. Congratulations to Mr. Srikanth Sastri and the entire GDPDC team for this achievement. GDI is truly a game changer which will give a huge boost to GIS adoption in our country.

It was an honor to witness this remarkable initiative and be part of a visionary collaboration. Congratulations to the entire team and partners for setting a new benchmark in innovation and execution. Looking forward to contributing to and supporting such impactful projects in the future!
