My father, David Packard, had a boundless curiosity about the world. When he turned that curiosity to the ocean, he brought a unique vision to the work of understanding the processes that sustain the largest living space on Earth. At MBARI, he teamed up talented scientists and engineers, with n extraordinary marine operations team, exceptional science communicators, and the myriad staff needed to keep the research institute functioning. Collectively, over nearly four decades, they have contributed so much to our knowledge of the living ocean. I'm excited to see what comes next! #ScienceAndEngineering #innovation #MarineScience #OceanExploration #eDNA #robotics #MarineBiology #oceanography #AUVs #mapping #biodiversity #chemistry #geology #MarineBiology #TechnologyTransfer
Celebrating a lasting legacy for ocean exploration! 🎉 From discovering new species of deep-sea jellyfish to revealing the intricate connections between fish migration and the carbon cycle, the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute’s (MBARI) contributions have been invaluable in advancing marine science and engineering to understand our changing ocean. Since it was founded in 1987 by David Packard, MBARI has remained an institution that is core to The David and Lucile Packard Foundation's legacy. It was born from David’s belief that addressing the unique challenges of ocean exploration required a new type of research institute—one that was independent in spirit and collaborative by design. As we continue our June theme of caring for nature to support self-care, we invite you to discover the book Braiding Sweetgrass: Indigenous Wisdom, Scientific Knowledge and the Teachings of Plants by Robin Wall Kimmerer. Robin touches upon the key concept that plants and animals are our oldest teachers, reawakening our ecological consciousness in our daily lives. She also suggests the notion of giving and receiving from the earth, as we understand nature and indigenous wisdom, we can equally learn to give our own gifts in return. 🌍 Innovation in action: soil analysis via satellite imagery 🚀 I'm delighted to share an exciting testing taking place on our family farm. QZ Solutions and Zbigniew Kawalec, a pioneer in soil analysis using satellite imagery, is currently conducting experiments on our plots. 🌾📊 Thanks to this cutting-edge technology, we should be able to precisely quantify the presence of nutrients and any deficiencies in our plots - all without even touching the soil!. 🌱This innovative approach is essential for the future of agriculture. By testing technologies like this, we hope to better understand to better understand disparities within the same field, and to adapt our fertilazation process subsequently. 🔍 The goal? To see how satellite imagery (way cheaper than classic soil samplings) can help optimize agricultural interventions while reducing the use of inputs and preserving our natural resources. 💡 I'm convinced that innovation is the engine that will shape tomorrow's agriculture. If you are working on innovative projects or would like to test your solutions, please don't hesitate to get in touch with me. I'm always open to new collaborations! #AgTech #AgriculturalInnovation #SoilAnalysis #SatelliteImagery #SustainableAgriculture #FarmingFuture #AgriTech
🇫🇷 Meet Maxence Guillaumot, 🇫🇷 who we had the pleasure of visiting last week on his fields in France! Maxence is our pilot user and early adopter, and he has graciously agreed to utilize his production fields to validate our Remote Soil Analysis and Mapping solution – SoilEO – on French soil. Using only hyperspectral spaceborne images, we will generate high-resolution and highly accurate soil nutrient maps for his fields, focusing on key inputs such as magnesium, potassium, phosphorus, and pH. These nutrients are essential for effective mineral fertilization processes. If all goes well, we are excited to consider rolling out the SoilEO service on a larger scale in France for the upcoming season!

⏳ History, herstory ... The land that is now Wonderland was farmed, then developed as a camping and leisure location, then left to rewild (effectively) and is now being restored to appropriate - albeit convivial - ecosystem. 🧊 Before any of that, of course, the land was stewarded for thousands of years by Native Americans (specifically Potawatomi, Ho-Chunk, Kickapoo and Peoria); and before that, if you go back far enough, it was beneath millions of tons of ice. 📖 As current stewards of the land, we are also well-placed to tell its story. Over the next 6-9 months, we will be publishing our findings on Patreon. Some of that story is beyond reach today. Some of it can be accessed through historical archives, and some by scientific testing. Some of the story requires a little imagination, and some we are in the process of making now. ⁉️ Our Patreon is here: https://lnkd.in/gYq_Kc6G. Come and support us, and share in the historical investigation. And just to get a sense of how things have changed, here's Pete Berry's wife "proving a pretty girl can make more than one catch" (!!!)
