My name is Andy Lee and I am the neuro-ophthalmologist here at Houston Methodist Hospital and the chair of the Department of Ophthalmology at the Blanton Eye Institute. So the American Academy Ophthalmology, the AAO national meeting has something for everyone. We have beginner level, intermediate level and advanced level courses. And this year I'm going to be talking about the pupil, curbside consults for comprehensive ophthalmologists and some really difficult and challenging cases for my fellow neuro-ophthalmologist. This year we're going to be talking to ophthalmic technicians and that's going to be at an intermediate to beginner level about the pupil. And so everyone needs to know a little bit about the pupil. The pupil can be a sign of potentially life threatening or vision threatening disease. And we're going to be helping ophthalmic technicians diagnose and help their doctors diagnose big pupils, small pupils and the relative afferent pupillary defect. At curbside consultations, we're going to be answering questions exactly like a physician would consult a clinician at the curbside, which is let me run a case by you. And so it's a case based didactic combination, hybrid format where we ask questions on cases and engage a panel of experts to help answer in a concise, clear and quick manner what clinicians really want to know, and framed in a way that a comprehensive ophthalmologist can have something to take home at the end of the academy meeting. The most important take home messages are how to deal with emergencies, and potentially vision or life threatening conditions that might look benign and start with the pupil, or start with just a simple curbside consult and end with an evaluation and a management plan that helps a patient.
