Great news for frequent train travelers! Indian Railways, in collaboration with IRCTC, has begun a major inspection drive to ensure food quality and hygiene on long-distance trains and railway stations. A 20-member team to inspect pantry cars and vendors inside its 60 plus trains. These include prominent trains like the Rajdhani, Vande Bharat, Shatabdi and Tejas.This comes after passenger complaints regarding food quality and overcharging by vendors. The 15-day inspection, starting June 14th, focuses on onboard catering services. Their focus areas include: 1. Meal Quality and Quantity: Ensuring portions meet designated standards and food preparation adheres to hygiene protocols. 2. Vendor Compliance: Verifying that vendors comply with FSSAI guidelines and offer fair pricing. 3. Essential Services: Confirming the availability of Rail Neer bottled water and other mandated services provided by pantry car vendors and train-side vendors. This initiative aligns with Indian Railways' ongoing commitment to provide high-quality food adhering to FSSAI regulations. Here are some existing measures aimed at achieving this goal: - Upgradation of base kitchens and kitchen units. - Installation of CCTV cameras for real-time monitoring of food preparation. - Deployment of IRCTC supervisors on Rajdhani trains. - Implementation of QR codes on food packets for easy access to information. - Regular third-party audits to assess hygiene and cleanliness. - Mandatory certification from designated Food Safety Officers for catering units. This is a welcome step towards improving the travel experience for millions of Indians. Train travel has long been synonymous with comfort and affordability. Yet, beyond its classic appeal, it has evolved into a hub for culinary adventures in recent times. Programs like the IRCTC eCatering policy, in collaboration with trusted partners like Zoop, offer passengers an extensive menu for ordering food through IRCTC. Presently, Zoop boasts a monthly revenue surpassing INR 2 crores and delivers 60,000 meals per month, with 400,000 meals served in the last quarter alone. Operating at over 180 train stations across India, Zoop achieved a milestone of 2 million train meals served in 2023. Puneet Sharma, the Founder of Zoop, commented, “We initiated our services even before food delivery options were accessible for trains. By partnering and aligning with IRCTC ecatering, our objective has always been to deliver hot, fresh, and hygienic meals from FSSAI-approved restaurants directly to train seats.
