Our Head of Agriculture Ellie Turner just published a piece in ImpactAlpha about her experience working with three investors on measuring their climate resilience. The UN estimates that we are hundreds of billions of dollars behind funding climate adaptation programs around the world. In order to continue investing in this space, we need to measure the success of already-existing programs to better reach vulnerable communities and ensure we further support successful initiatives. Recently, Sonen’s Director of Private Markets, Carolyn Ezelino, participated in a session on navigating transition risk at Confluence Philanthropy's Climate Solution summit. The session underscored the urgent need for action from public and private entities to align with a 1.5°C decarbonized economy by 2050. While the costs and challenges of a just transition are significant, the costs of inaction may be even greater. In the panel Carolyn emphasized, “For this to work, we cannot exacerbate the divide that already exists – transition [to net zero] cannot mean a higher cost burden for vulnerable communities, it cannot mean a loss of livelihood, it cannot mean displacement. Success is a just transition.” #impactinvesting #justtransition

Small farm holders and indigenous people are lifeline of the world. And if small farm holders and indigenous people are not surviving, we as a country, as world will not survive. They are custodians of the environment, they are custodian of the climate change, they are custodian of their local ecosystem because for them there is so much to lose. And that is why they are very importantly safeguarding the ecosystem they are living in, that’s a thing they call ‘home’. For that it is important that they not just survive but thrive. Farmers are abandoning farming at an alarming pace in the past few decades especially with advent of technology advancements, and one sided trading models. Inspite of large number of big agri corporates, Govt interventions and VC/ PE money, the society is failing the farmers and indigenous people- small farm holders and indigenous people are not able to survive. Agriculture sector provides largest number of jobs worldwide. Majority of people are dependent of it for their livelihood. The present system is designed to support one sided trading model, and not favoring famers who are actually the ‘producers’, or the source. Majority of farmers in India are small farm holders- more than 85% earning less than $500 in entire year in India.  And this small money is not going to sustain or motivate small farm holders to continue farming. To top it up, the climate change imbalance where small farm holders are the first casualty as well. For farming to sustain, for small farm holders to be relevant, it is very important that we have value added farming produces, as near as possible to the small farmholders …. And for that we also need some level of farmers becoming entrepreneurs, SMEs…. so that income level of farmers can increase, they are able 'build and own' their brands. And for that to be a real change maker path, we need to catalyze them as ‘Lighthouse place based entrepreneurs’ building their local, regional brands representing their region, their custom, their land. And then only we will find a way that small farmers can continue to exist and be relevant for the ecosystem. And if small farm holders are not surviving, we as a country, as world will not survive. They are custodians of the environment, they are custodian of the climate change, they are custodian of their local ecosystem because for them there is so much to lose. And that is why they are very importantly safeguarding the ecosystem they are living in, that’s a thing they call ‘home’ .
