CLIME based Division of Molecular Biology and Human Genetics and Ruvandhi Nathavitharana based at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Harvard Medical School are conducting the TWART-TB study. THWART-TB is based in Tygerberg Hospital, Cape Town, and is aiming to tackle the global TB crisis. With 1.7 billion people infected, this research focuses on health workers at high risk in this setting (34% annually!). By conducting detailed evaluations, they plan on uncovering immune responses to better predict who may develop TB disease. This vital knowledge will help refine preventive strategies and ultimately save lives. Stay tuned for updates on this exciting study! #TBResearch #TWARTTB #HealthForAll

Hot off the press! Another look at how biology behaves. The more we know, the more systematic our approach can be when improving our health and increasing our lifespan. "The atlas has allowed the researchers to discover new proteins inside cells that are responsible for a range of important bodily functions. The team focused on a droplet-like part of the cell called a condensate which is a meeting hub for proteins to go and organize themselves. These hubs are also key sites where disease processes start." https://lnkd.in/gudHyYU5

At ROME, we are focused on illuminating the #DarkGenome — the long stretches of DNA that do not encode for traditional proteins — which is primarily made up of repetitive elements, or repeats. In healthy adult cells, repeats are dormant. However, in cases of disease or cellular stress, repeats can switch on. Activated repeats can be transcribed into RNA and translated into proteins, which can have downstream effects that promote disease. It’s only in the last decade or so that scientists have had the tools to shine light on the dark genome. We’re proud to be at the forefront of this new frontier in biology, uncovering new knowledge about the repeatome and discovering and developing therapies to address repeat dysregulation. https://lnkd.in/dDukvXkM #DrugDiscovery #DrugDevelopment #ScienceCareers #LifeScienceIndustry

Really interesting read on Shravya Shetty and the team's work on Med-Gemini and how it compares across different medical modalities!
Excited to share our new research in the Med-Gemini family. Our research pushes the boundaries of multimodal capabilities across clinical domains. Our Med-Gemini models excel in medical visual Q&A, report generation (CXR, CT scans), disease risk prediction from genomics, & classification across a range of benchmarks. arxiv.org/pdf/2405.03162

Precision medicine, also known as personalized medicine or individualized medicine, is an innovative approach to healthcare that takes into account individual differences in genetics, environment, and lifestyle. The goal of precision medicine is to tailor medical treatment and preventive care to the specific characteristics of each patient, rather than adopting a one-size-fits-all approach. Development of treatments that target specific molecular pathways or genetic mutations involved in disease, allowing for more effective and precise treatment with fewer side effects. A new research paper by our incredible teams at Google Research and Google DeepMind shows the strong performance of Med-Gemini across a variety of multimodal tasks, including 2D and 3D imaging in radiology, histopathology, ophthalmology, and dermatology, and genomics. Med-Gemini ranked best in class on chest X-ray and CT scan report generation, and is able to perform genomics-based disease prediction and mortality risk more accurately than a standard linear polygenic risk score (PRS) based approach. This work couldn't have been possible without close collaboration with our partners, including a panel of specialists who assessed and rated our models as part of this research. These promising results showcase the potential of LLMs to transform medicine as we know it. https://lnkd.in/dHx8_DYh
