Food culture: It drives our morning rituals, our lunch routines, our weekend celebrations. It encompasses prevailing stories around food within a given society.
Change the culture and you change the harm food systems cause to people and the planet. But how can this be achieved? Lawrence Haddad CMG, Gunhild Anker Stordalen and Dan LeClair dig into how we can transform our food culture in this opinion.

[Changing INDUSTRY TRENDS] On 14 October, Woolworths will launch six new wines in a can, utilising the brand equity of established wine brands to entice new and existing consumers to augment their wine-drinking habits and improve the reputation of canned wine as a category.
The six wines and brands include Diemersdal Sauvignon Blanc, Kleine Zalze Chenin Blanc, De Wetshof Limestone Hill Chardonnay, Haute Cabriere Tranquille Blush, Beyerskloof Pinotage, and Ken Forrester SGM. They are available in four-packs and priced between R119.99 and R159.99.
While wine purists might scoff at the thought, the alternatively packaged wine market is booming. Far from posing a threat to the industry and premium wines, it offers a lifeline and gateway to entice a new wine-drinking demographic.

🔵🟢 Delivering positive change for people and the planet
I think this is one of the most powerful images about eating meat I’ve seen in years. It’s from the amazing Alexis Gauthier restaurant which is pioneering high end plant based cooking. It’s had mixed reactions on my personal Instagram but also great engagement. I think it’s activist art at its best. It walks the line between shock and poignance that is so hard to achieve in #vegancomms. Its sad and humourous. Gross and poignant. What do you think? #govegan#art#creative#climatecrisis

🌍 Celebrating Young Advocates for Food Sustainability at Sankrail World Food Day! 🌱
Inspired by the FAO's impactful initiatives, Samposhyam Foundation hosted a drawing contest on World Food Day at Sankrail, encouraging young minds to creatively express ideas on balanced diets, food conservation, and sustainable food practices. We also captured a behind-the-scenes video as the children began their artwork, sharing their thoughts on what their drawings represent and the values they hold around food and health.
The excitement and awareness these young artists displayed are a testament to the power of early education in sustainability. Through their drawings, they highlighted dietary diversity, the importance of portion control, and the value of conserving food to reduce waste. One standout feature was their use of symbols like coconut water for hydration, which showcases accessible, nutritious choices that benefit everyone, including underserved communities.
A special thanks to the FAO for inspiring us with the concept of the "drawing plate." This activity allowed us to go further by interacting with the participants to understand their perspectives on food systems and choices. Their enthusiasm shows that even small actions and conversations can drive positive change toward a healthier, more mindful world.
💡 Let’s continue to inspire future generations to conserve food, make diverse choices, and work towards an inclusive, sustainable food system.
