- Deciding whether or not a data scientist should be promoted can be difficult for any leader. Let's look at how to properly assess whether an employee deserves a promotion, looking at everything from technical abilities to their understanding and contribution to the overall business. As discussed in a previous video, the first step you'll need to take as a manager is to ensure that the promotion is warranted and justifiable. So as a manager, you must be explicit about the goals that must be met for the promotion to occur. These should not be easy goals and they should not be subjective. The first thing you should do is measure one's impact on the business. For example, the senior data scientist position does not just mean that you are a data scientist with more years of experience. It is the difference in responsibility of the impact of your data science or machine learning models on the business you work in.…
