Identity verification via Persona

Having an identity verification by Persona on your profile means that you had a valid government-issued ID and it’s verified by LinkedIn’s verification partner, Persona. 

Please note the following:

Availability: Identity verification by Persona is currently available to LinkedIn members with IDs from the countries listed below. Your LinkedIn profile location must be one of the supported countries for which identity verification by Persona is available. We’re actively working on expanding to more countries in the upcoming months.

Government IDs: To verify your identity through Persona, you’ll provide Persona a photo of a valid NFC-enabled passport (or e-passport) that’s been issued to you. Your passport is NFC-capable if you see the biometric symbol on the Government ID.

Adding a verification is optional. You’re not required to add one to your profile.

Name matching: The name on your government issued ID (e.g. passport) must match the name on your LinkedIn profile. If you have a LinkedIn profile in another language, the name on your government issued ID also needs to match the name on your secondary language profile. Your verification won't be added to your LinkedIn profile unless they match. 

Devices: This verification method can be accessed via the LinkedIn mobile app (iOS and Android). It is currently not available on web browsers. You will be prompted for a QR code on web browsers that you can scan using your mobile device.

Camera access: If you’ve not already granted the LinkedIn app permission to access your mobile device camera, you’ll be prompted by your Android or iOS device to enable it. This permission is required to complete your identity verification. If you’ve granted the app such permission, Persona will ask you to take a picture of your government issued ID (e.g. passport). For additional region-specific disclosures that may apply, see here. Please note that LinkedIn’s data centers, which store our members’ information, are currently located in the U.S.

Data collection and sharing: Although you’ll access Persona’s verification process through the LinkedIn app, Persona will be the party collecting certain personal data required to verify your identity including an image of your government issued ID (e.g. passport) and a selfie. To enable Persona to link your verification request with your LinkedIn account and provide you support, LinkedIn will provide Persona a hashed version of your LinkedIn Member ID (“RequestID”) and your public profile URL. Persona shares the following information about you with LinkedIn and will ask for your consent before doing so:

  • Your name as it appears on your government issued ID (e.g. passport)
  • The type of ID document you’ve submitted to Persona to verify your identity (i.e., passport)
  • The issuer of that ID document
  • A hashed, unique identifier generated by Persona during the ID verification process (“UID”)
  • Your RequestID

LinkedIn will use this data for security purposes (ex: to prevent identity theft and fraudulent use of LinkedIn’s verification processes), in accordance with LinkedIn’s Privacy Policy. LinkedIn doesn’t receive your biometric data or photos, numbers, or expiry or issue dates associated with your government issued ID (e.g. passport).

Verifications are visible, but you can remove them anytime. Once verified, a verification badge may be visible on your profile. LinkedIn may display on your profile the country that issued your government issued ID (e.g. passport). You can remove the verification anytime by visiting Settings.

How to verify your identity with Persona

If the name on your government issued ID (e.g. passport) matches the name on your LinkedIn profile, your identity verification will then be visible on your profile. Your actual government ID information itself will not be visible but LinkedIn may display the issuing country of your government issued ID (e.g. passport) on your profile.

You’ll be redirected to Persona’s verification process, which is accessible through the LinkedIn App. You’ll then be prompted to carry out the following steps:

  1. Agree to Persona’s Identity Service Terms of Use and Persona’s Privacy Policy.
  2. Take a photo of your government issued ID (e.g. your passport).
  3. Scan the NFC chip.
  4. Take a photo of yourself.
  5. Click Yes, Share to share the verification and certain related information with LinkedIn.

To access and start Persona’s verification process, click Resources on your LinkedIn profile, then About this profile, and then click Verify now.

To remove identity verification on Desktop, iOS, or Android

  1. Click here to jump to your settings, or click on the Me tab at the top right of your screen.

  2. Click on Settings & Privacy.

  3. Under Account preferences, click on Verifications.

  4. Confirm your deletion. Please note we can’t restore the verification once it’s deleted.
