WHAT HAPPENED? HOW DO WE FIX IT? Mistakes at Work? What to do? Handling an error at work requires a balanced approach of responsibility, reflection, and proactive problem-solving. Here’s a good process: 1. Acknowledge the Error Promptly: If you realize there’s been an error, acknowledge it immediately. Avoiding or delaying can make the situation worse and affect team morale. 2. Assess the Situation: Take a moment to understand the scope and impact of the error. Identify what went wrong, how serious it is, and any immediate consequences. Inform Relevant Stakeholders: Be transparent with the people who need to know. This may include your manager, team members, or affected clients. Share the facts of what happened and focus on what you’re doing to fix it. 3. Take Responsibility: Own up to your part in the error without making excuses. This shows maturity and accountability, which most employers value highly. 4, Correct the Error: Prioritize fixing the issue or mitigating its impact as best as possible. Actively involve any team members who might be needed to resolve it. 5. Reflect and Learn: After the situation is under control, take time to review what led to the error. Analyze what changes could prevent it in the future, whether that’s adjusting workflows, setting reminders, or seeking additional training. 6. Communicate Improvements: Share your learning and improvements with your manager or team so they know that you're committed to growth and continuous improvement.
