About us
The Texas Association of Health Plans (TAHP) is the statewide trade association representing health insurers, health maintenance organizations, and other related healthcare entities operating in Texas. Our members provide health and supplemental benefits to Texans through employer-sponsored coverage, the individual insurance market, and public programs such as Medicare and Medicaid. The association was founded in 1987, and represents the healthcare industry’s commitment to improving healthcare for Texans. TAHP is dedicated to advocating for public and private healthcare issues that improve access, value and quality of care for many Texans. We bring together industry leadership to develop answers to the critical healthcare issues in Texas through continuous communication with its members, industry and community stakeholders, as well as with representatives of the Legislature and state agencies. As the voice for health plans in Texas, TAHP strives to increase public awareness about our members’ services, health care delivery benefits and contributions to communities throughout the state.

At #TAHP2024, Superior HealthPlan's Jared Wolfe offered a fascinating look at prior authorization's evolution in American health care. Key historical insights: 🏥 First prior auth dates to 1917 Pierce County Industrial Medical Bureau ⚕️ Early insurance focused on hospital prepayment through Blue Cross 🔍 United Mine Workers pioneered modern prior auth to address quality issues 📋 Medicare/Medicaid cost challenges in 1960s expanded prior auth use 🤝 HMOs emerged as solution through trusted provider networks Understanding this history helps explain how we got here - and where we might go next. Prior authorization has always balanced access, quality, and cost - a challenge that continues today.
