When members share their mental health journey, it reminds all of us here at Spring Health why we do what we do. Thank you Peter Waterman at Microsoft for sharing your relatable experience and recognizing support comes in many forms. 🌿

Recruiting partners to build the most competitive and successful healthcare and life sciences partner ecosystem

November is Movember, and also Men's Health Awareness Month. As I attempt to grow facial hair, I wanted to take a minute to share something I rarely share which is my own mental health journey. Shortly after joining Microsoft in 2020 there were a lot of things happening in my personal world in addition to what we were going through as a global community with the COVID-19 pandemic. Many of my personal challenges were leaving me feeling sad, confused, conflicted and unsure of how to best handle these challenges without overburdening others I cared about. Thankfully one of the first steps in my journey and the first partners I engaged with was connecting with Arianna Huffington and the team at Thrive Global. Arianna is a champion of mental health and as I worked with the Thrive team I also started using their platform to make micro-changes in my own life. These exercises started to reduce my feeling of being overwhelmed and gave me tasks to focus on (I am good with a list). The second big step was a reintroduction to the teachings of Brené Brown thanks to the leadership of Kate Johnson. Kate brought in Brene and her team to deliver leadership trainings across our organization. I am grateful to be part of an organization focused on helping their employees grow as people not just as employees. I still carry the mantra of Clear is Kind. I have taken advantage of other services provided by Microsoft, including counseling from Spring Health. I also take time almost every day to run with my crew in the morning, meditate for at least 5 minutes, hug my dogs and my wife, write something in my journal (still a work in progress) and continue to build my mental health muscles. As we get ready to enjoy a few days off and few too many calories next week, I want to be sure to give thanks to those who have helped me and continue to support my journey. Mental health is health, and I recognize that it is often challenging to admit to needing help. I encourage you to find support where you can, take time every day to give yourself credit and grace, and remember that like building the endurance to run a marathon (I recently ran an 8-minute PR and Boston qualifying time marathon) building mental health takes time and work. But it is worth it. #movember #mentalhealth

Living authentically shouldn’t feel dangerous. But according to surveys by McKinsey, trans employees consistently experience feelings of anxiety and alienation at their jobs. For #TransgenderAwarenessWeek, we’re sharing 5 tips on how to create a safer, more #inclusive workplace for trans employees. 🏳️⚧️ 1. Offer trans competency training. This training can help leaders and employees understand the barriers trans employees face, the importance of proper pronoun usage, and addressing stigma.
 2. Support transitioning employees. When an employee comes out as trans, it’s important for leaders to provide an affirmative experience. This can include collaborating with HR to notify others about pronoun and/or name changes and connecting the employee with resources, such as an ERG or coaching. 3. Make policy — and put it into practice. Consider implementing a zero-tolerance policy for transphobia or bullying, an equity and diversity commitment, and a transparent complaint process. 4. Create space for authentic expression. To foster more openness and self-expression, companies can provide a gender-neutral dress code and encourage sharing pronouns. 5. Put support systems in place. Trans employees (and everyone else) can benefit from ERGs, mental health benefits, and regular check-ins to ensure on-going support and understanding. Creating an environment where trans employees feel safe and respected fosters conditions for greater expression, creativity, and authenticity in the workplace. #mentalhealth #EAP #inclusivity

A Friday reminder as you end your week — it’s natural to feel overwhelmed during uncertain times. When the world feels a bit chaotic, it can help to focus on what we can control. While we may not have power over every event or every outcome, we do have a say in how we spend our time, whom we choose to engage with, and how we show up for ourselves and others. Recognizing what’s within our control can be a grounding and empowering practice, offering strength and calm. 🌱💚 #mentalhealth #Fridayreminder #mindfulness #workplacewellbeing #EAP

The #holidays can be tough for people recovering from substance use disorder, as the pressure to partake may be at its peak. In fact, 49% of holiday season traffic fatalities involve alcohol (CDC). Managers, you can play a pivotal role in creating an inclusive and celebratory holiday environment where #sober employees feel included, welcomed, and safe. Here are three useful tips to keep in mind as the holidays approach: 🎁 Make sure there are plenty of non-alcoholic options at company get-togethers. Seltzers and sodas are great — and festive mocktails can brighten the mood even more. 🎁 Consider alternative ways to get into the holiday spirit that don’t involve drinking at all. Think of activities like volunteering at the local animal shelter or a group exercise class to bond in a healthy way. 🎁 Reduce stigma and educate your workforce on substance use disorder, during the holidays and all year long. Managers can be a first line of support to connect employees with information and resources, such as an EAP that offers comprehensive support for alcohol and drug use. Do you have other ways you’re fostering an inclusive workplace during the holidays? Add your tips and suggestions in the comments. #managers #mentalhealth #workplacewellbeing #sobriety #holidays #workculture

We want to thank our veterans for their service, while also acknowledging the complex mental health challenges they face upon returning to civilian life. 👉 10-30% of veterans experience major depressive disorder. Anxiety disorders are also common, often co-occurring with PTSD. 👉 Close to 11% of veterans presenting for care within the VHA system meet the criteria for a substance use disorder diagnosis. 👉 The suicide rate for veterans is 1.5x higher than that of the general population. This is exactly what makes our Specialty Care solution so important — it provides rapid access to intensive treatment for acute behavioral health conditions including PTSD and SUDs. Just as Spring Health’s Chief Medical Officer, Millard Brown, emphasizes, our veterans deserve quality mental health support. Remember that reaching out for help is a sign of strength — not weakness.

You voted. The election happened. Now what? Election results can stir up a wide range of emotions: joy, relief, disappointment, sadness, even anger. And whether your candidate wins or loses, here are some ways to navigate these intense emotions in a healthy way at home and at work. Here are 5 tips to consider: 1. Acknowledge your feelings. It’s normal to feel strong emotions after an election. And don’t try to hide or push down your emotions, as this can cause more stress. Take a moment to reflect on how you feel and if it helps, reach out to a friend or family member to talk about it. 2. Practice mindfulness. There could be a lot racing through your mind right now, and it’s important to center yourself. Deep breathing, meditation, or even going for a walk can help you focus on your surroundings, feel calmer, and avoid reacting too quickly. 3. Take a social media break. Social media can be draining, especially during an election filled with arguing and negative posts. Instead of scrolling, try doing something that lifts your mood: getting out into nature, spending time with friends, or practicing a favorite hobby. 4. Engage in respectful conversations. When discussing election results, approach conversations with kindness and respect. Listen, stay open-minded, and remember — it’s okay to disagree, but do so without being rude or hurtful. 5. Get involved in your community. If your candidate doesn’t win, channel that energy into something positive. This might look like volunteering or supporting a cause you’re passionate about. Taking action can lift your spirits and give you a renewed sense of purpose. Finally, don’t be afraid to reach out for help if you need it. If election results are making you feel anxious, upset, or they’re impacting your day-to-day functioning, a therapist can help. You can also join our webinar “Processing Post Election Emotions” on Monday, Nov. 11 from 3 - 4 p.m. ET. Register here: https://lnkd.in/ddxRrpf6

Employees, managers, mental healthcare providers, and everyone supporting others — how are you doing this week? 😅 A gentle reminder: Even those who provide care and support, like therapists and coaches, are human too. Feeling stressed, exhausted, or overwhelmed? It’s okay.
During challenging weeks, remember to prioritize your own mental well-being. Supporting yourself is the first step in being there for others. 💚
