All articles in Nutrients MDPI (ISSN: 2072-6643) Vol 16, Issue 21, are now freely available to access, read and download: https://brnw.ch/21wODAt COVER STORY: Vitamin D supplementation is notable for its role in enhancing insulin secretion and improving insulin receptor function, potentially reducing insulin resistance by lowering inflammation. It aids in maintaining low reactive oxygen species levels, normalizing calcium signaling, and modulating cytokines to reduce inflammation. This collaborative review by Polish and Greek researchers explores Vitamin D’s impact on glycemic control in individuals with T2DM (type 2 diabetes) by analyzing recent studies. Findings suggest that Vitamin D, used alongside antidiabetic medications, may improve glycemic control and lower diabetic complications, serving as a valuable supplement in pharmacological treatments for T2DM. A study published in the Open Access journal Cancers MDPI explores the correlation between Alzheimer's disease (AD) and the likelihood of developing different types of cancers in people from Korea. The study, cited in The Observer, used a large cohort data set of 24,664 AD patients and 98,656 control patients in a 16-year follow-up. The researchers found that overall, patients with AD had a significantly lower chance of developing specific cancer types, particularly in those older than 60 years. This link urges further research to understand the protective measure AD has to play in cancer development. Understanding this could help lead the development of new treatments.
