It's #NatureDay at #COP29 with IUCN and the COP29 Presidency hosting numerous events on “Nature and Biodiversity, Indigenous Peoples, Gender Equality, Oceans and Coastal Zones”. The events highlighted the importance of investing in biodiversity conservation and restoring the ecosystems that are the major drivers of human and planetary health, and effective ways of addressing #ClimateChange impacts and ensuring resilience. They also put an emphasis on the ecological integrity and nature-based solutions as critical bridges between climate and #biodiversity agendas, centering on biodiversity support and Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities (IPLC) leadership. 🌍A global movement for biodiversity conservation🌍 The IUCN Red List of Threatened Species is celebrating the 60 years of being a critical barometer of life which assesses the state of our planet’s #biodiversity. With the launch of the #IconicSpecies campaign we aim to engage millions of people in creating awareness about the some of the planet’s most remarkable and threatened species, that are just as iconic as the things we cherish. We would like to take this opportunity to thank the supporters and global leaders Jane Goodall (UN Messenger of Peace and founder of The Jane Goodall Institute), Dona Bertarelli (Executive Chair, Dona Bertarelli Philanthropy), Pierfrancesco Vago (Chair, the MSC Foundation’s executive committee, HSH Prince Albert II (Prince of Monaco), Richard Sneider (Special Advisor to the IUCN, FFSG global chair), Francisca Cortés Solari (Executive president Philanthropy Cortés Solari), Sabrina Peng (Senior Vice President、Chief Sustainability Officer of Ant Group) and Eric Jing (Chairman and CEO of Ant Group) who have lend their voices in support of this movement which is committed to protecting our natural world. 🔗➡️Click here to learn more about the campaign and see how you can be part of the solution. https://lnkd.in/eDgX_KdF Let’s keep the momentum going for a sustainable future! #IUCNRedList #Conservation #Sustainablefuture #GlobalMovement #DonateNow #Savetheplanet #Protecttheplanet

Addressing the High Level Segment of #COP29, IUCN Director General Dr Grethel Aguilar highlighted the importance of #nature at the United Nations #Climate Change Conference. "We need to leave Baku with a strong New Collective Quantified Goal that is capable of enabling scaled-up action on mitigation, adaptation, and loss and damage. It must also provide more support for nature, Indigenous peoples and local communities – and remain firmly gender-responsive," said Dr Aguilar. Read the full statement here➡️ https://bit.ly/3AQyXmc

How can we ensure the expansion of green infrastructure in nature positive? The use of metrics that measure progress and encourage actions towards restoration and protection of nature will be crucial. Speaking at a #COP29 event on Nature- and People-Positive renewable energy with The Global Initiative for Nature, Grids and Renewables (GINGR) Rachel Asante-Owusu, Senior Programme Coordinator, Climate Change and Energy Transition, IUCN highlighted the importance of measuring progress. Ms Asante-Owusu said, "We need to start thinking about transform, incorporate and develop new renewable energy projects in a way that is nature positive. If we want to implement #NaturePositive around the energy transition, we need to have metrics where we can measure progress and monitor what's happening so we can incorporate adaptive management." GINGR aims to support the just and sustainable energy transition by providing assessment tools to quantify contributions to Nature- and People-Positive goals. With the rising impacts of #ClimateChange across the world, it is crucial that the United Nations Climate Conference delivers concrete and accelerated progress across all the pillars of the Paris Agreement, particularly finance. Finance remains central to the achievement of all #climate goals. There is an urgent need for funding that addresses the scale of the challenge, covers the entire spectrum of mitigation, adaptation and loss and damage, and fully takes into account the needs and priorities of developing country Parties, particularly of vulnerable communities and ecosystems. In an effort to accelerate a #nature positive and people positive energy transition, IUCN is partnering with LONGi Green Energy Technology, the world’s largest solar manufacturer. Speaking at the signing at #COP29, Deputy Director General for Programmes in IUCN, Stewart Maginnis said,“We are very different partners but we’ve got the same vision about how we address two major challenges that are facing the world. We have to address #ClimateChange and we have to address #biodiversity loss with greater urgency, we cannot trade one off against the other. We have to find nature-positive solutions, so I’m really happy that we are working to move forward on nature-positive renewables.” The collaboration will aim to support the promotion of co-benefits for nature, climate and communities from photovoltaic projects, including the implementation of #NaturebasedSolutions. 🐠Climate change is the main threat to reef-building corals, according to the latest update of the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species™. Cutting #GreenhouseGas emissions is the main solution to save solution to save corals, with forty-four per cent of reef-building coral species globally at risk of extinction. Built over tens of thousands of years, coral reefs are the most biodiverse of marine ecosystems. #ClimateChange causes rising water temperatures and more intense solar radiation, which lead to coral bleaching and disease often resulting in mass coral mortality.
