The 40 African countries receiving IDA support account for over 70% of its global commitments. Addressing global infrastructure gaps, and expanding access to reliable, affordable and sustainable energy is critical for Africa and a key focus of IDA21, especially in the continent’s fragile and conflict-affected countries. Building partnerships with the private sector in Africa can help improve infrastructure and expand energy access. The IFC's investment of $100 million in Release by Scatec exemplifies a strategic approach to addressing energy challenges through innovative, modular solar power solutions. The involvement of IDA’s Private Sector Window (PSW) Liquidity Support Guarantee of $65 million makes a difference. It demonstrates a proactive measure to alleviate liquidity risks that can hinder private sector investments, particularly in fragile markets. The IDA PSW enables high-impact projects that otherwise would not happen. #IDAworks #IDA21 🔗 https://lnkd.in/gvkE7pg8

In #Tanzania, Kioo Glass is revolutionizing sustainable manufacturing. As the largest glass manufacturer in East #Africa, KIOO produces over 1 million bottles daily, incorporating 40% recycled materials. But they’re not stopping there. With IFC’s support, KIOO is doubling their commitment to sustainability. Their ambitious plan aims to recycle up to 35,700 tons of glass annually--equivalent to 100+ million bottles--keeping them out of landfills and reducing CO2 emissions by over 4,000 tons every year. In May 2024, IFC provided KIOO with a loan of up to $45 million to help the company expand production, including the construction and operation of a new furnace. This follows IFC’s previous financial support for KIOO, including a $10 million loan made in 2021 at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. Discover how sustainable practices are shaping the future of manufacturing in Africa and beyond. 🌱♻️ http://wrld.bg/JzT450UbZoT #COP29 #greenfinance #decarbonization #acceleratingthetransition

Welcome to Nature and Biodiversity, Gender Equality, and Oceans Day at #COP29 in Baku. All three are crucial to the global fight against #ClimateChange and achieving the goals of the #ParisAgreement. See what IFC - International Finance Corporation is doing across these key sectors: 🌲 🌳 🌴 #Nature and #Biodiversity 🌲 🌳 🌴 Biodiversity supports basic human needs and underpins economic growth. Yet unprecedented losses over the last fifty years are threatening to undermine key industries and economic development, particularly in emerging markets. To add to the challenge, there is an annual $200 billion gap in #BiodiversityFinance, and most of it will have to come from the private sector. How do we mobilize private capital to invest into #NatureFinance at scale? IFC - International Finance Corporation is working to unlock private investment into nature finance with clear rules of the road like the Biodiversity Finance Guide and innovative financial instruments like the #BiodiversityBond with BBVA – both the world’s first. Today is #GenderEquality at #COP29. 🟢 Addressing climate change will require fundamental shifts away from business as usual and towards green, resilient, and inclusive economies driven by regenerative, renewable, and nature-positive processes. This transition must be just and equitable and emphasize the inclusion of all people, including women and girls, who are often disproportionately impacted by climate change and often left out of new climate-related opportunities. 🟢 Bringing women into climate decision-making and securing their active participation in green transitions will result in more impactful and effective private sector-led climate action and improved risk management. Gender-lens climate finance can deliver transformative investments to improve climate adaptation and mitigation, while also reducing economic gaps between women and men. 🟢 Increasingly, IFC is investing with an integrated climate and gender lens, looking for opportunities to advance women’s leadership, employment, and entrepreneurship in green transitions and increase women’s access to green finance and climate-friendly products and services. IFC’s pioneering Gender x Climate program focuses on advancing investments in climate mitigation and adaptation. #Champion Colleague. I invite you to listen to my colleague Hassan K.. Based in Dakar, Senegal, Hassan explains the role IFC is playing in accelerating the growth of the cotton-to-textiles industry in West Africa. Working with IFC’s partners, what Hassan and his team have enabled is an extraordinary example of development action to create jobs and unleash a future of opportunity for the people of West Africa. From his front-row seat in leading this amazing transformation, and seeing with his own eyes the meaningful impact taking shape, Hassan shares with us what it has taken to create formal and safe manufacturing jobs at scale, including for women and young people entering the workforce. Already, if you consider garments exported from West Africa to U.S. and European markets, some 80% to 90% of those garments are coming from our first supported factory in Ghana, even before other factories open for business.
