Toineeta Saunooke-Leonard is a member of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians. With her role at Blue Cross NC, she is a voice for her tribe and aims to educate others on her culture and traditions. For American Indian Heritage Month, she shared "To better serve tribal communities, do not be afraid to ask questions. We learn and increase our knowledge by asking questions. With that, also include tribal communities. Let them know that they too have a seat at the table."

Today’s students will be tomorrow’s leaders on the front lines. Our investment in them will ensure that North Carolina has the talent and knowledge base we need to follow through on western NC’s long-term rebuilding plans … and to help communities across the state prepare for the next crisis situation. https://lnkd.in/e4y-d97s

Across NC it can be challenging to find a doctor and get to your appointment, but Anna Baird, a pharmacist at Realo Drugs in New Bern is a familiar face in her community. “More Than a Script gives me the opportunity to sit down with patients, answer questions and help them live a healthier life.” https://lnkd.in/eFnFdXJF

This summer Durham Public Schools had to close their kitchens for a four-week period, leaving 16,800 children without access to reliable meals. This group of teen entrepreneurs stepped in to create and implement a plan to address the upcoming gap, called the Teens Tackle Hunger program. With support from our County Engagement Team, Healthy Blue, and The Blue Cross and Blue Shield of NC Foundation, the Teens Tackle Hunger Program took a multipronged approach to feeding DPS children and families that included food truck events and teen farmers markets where hot meals and bags of fresh produce were distributed to any who needed them. This rockstar group provided over 4,500 healthy meals to the Durham Community over a four-week period!

As a care manager, Cheryl describes herself as a “ferocious bull” when it comes to supporting our members. She works hard to help each of them access resources and get the care they deserve. When she first reached out to our member, Leo, he was in the hospital and she had to communicate through his wife. Since English is not their first language, the family struggled to communicate with their primary care doctor and they were having difficulty getting a prescription for Leo’s diabetes medication, causing his A1C levels to rise dangerously high. When Cheryl stepped in, she not only got Leo his medication but also connected him with nutrition resources - all which helped lower his A1C. “The family depended on me as their advocate connecting with their doctor, and we formed a strong relationship. Sometimes I have to be the momma to our members.” Cheryl is on the Blue Cross NC Healthcare, Care Management team. To protect our member's privacy, we did not use their real name. https://lnkd.in/eYm7mpTb
