Today, I had the awesome opportunity to meet Edna Gibson from Guest Services. She's the friendly face greeting all our patients and guests at Janeway Tower with a smile and warm personality. It's such a privilege to connect with our frontline teammates -- especially those like Edna, who make everyone feel welcomed the moment they walk through our doors. Thank you, Edna, for everything you do!  Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist

On Wednesday, October 30th, the Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist Comprehensive Cancer Center was abuzz with energy as leaders from across our academic enterprise gathered for the Academic Leaders Equity Forum. Hosted by the Office of Justice and Belonging, Office of Diversity Equity and Inclusion, and the Center for Advancing Racial Equity, this year’s event was all about “Inclusive Leadership: Fostering a Culture of Justice and Belonging.”  The forum kicked off with an inspiring keynote presentation from Bernadette Smith, who captivated the audience with her dynamic ARC Method, providing practical strategies for fostering inclusivity. The excitement continued with DEI Spotlights and Breakout Sessions, where leaders delved into DEI across the enterprise and connected with colleagues to learn more about specific departmental efforts. Leaders left with new insights and actionable strategies to advance our commitment For ALL. The highlight of the event was the honoring of Dr. Julie Freischlag, who received the Justice and Belonging Lifetime Achievement Award – celebrating her visionary leadership and unwavering dedication to fostering justice and belonging throughout the enterprise. • Healing beyond borders 🩺🇩🇴 Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist clinicians recently traveled to the Dominican Republic to bring free essential orthopaedic care to El Buen Samaritano Hospital in La Romana. For the second year, surgeons, anesthesia specialists, orthopedic residents, nurses and surgical technicians arrived with donated supplies and specialized equipment to treat patients with complex and untreated orthopaedic conditions. Over the course of a week, the team performed free life-changing procedures for 20 patients, helping people with chronic bone infections, hand injuries and other trauma-related cases. Dr. Jason Halvorson, orthopaedic surgeon at Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist and associate professor of orthopaedic surgery at Wake Forest University School of Medicine, led the volunteer expedition. “This mission trip is a testament to our deep commitment to health equity and supporting communities, no matter where they are,” said Dr. Halvorson. “We’re here to make a real difference for each patient, providing not only surgical care but a path to healing and renewed mobility.” The group plans to volunteer again next year, aiming to serve even more patients and provide continued support with their rehabilitation.

  • We hit a hole-in-one at the annual 2024 Koman Children's Classic, raising over $80,000 for individuals with Cerebral Palsy! 🎉 The event at Forsyth Country Club was a huge success, filled with fantastic golf, delicious meals, and an amazing turnout. 🏌️♂️🍽️ The excitement didn't stop there – we had some fantastic prizes up for grabs and were honored to have celebrity appearances by Kyle Petty and Bobby Labonte. 🏎 Thank you to everyone who participated and made this event un-fore-gettable. Dr. L. Andrew Koman has helped children with special needs and bone deformities in Winston-Salem for 42 years. The research team within the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery and Rehabilitation at Wake Forest University School of Medicine pioneered the use of botulinum toxin in cerebral palsy, changing care for hundreds of thousands worldwide. This important research defines current and future care and these educational programs, funded by initiatives like our annual golf classic, ensure that the next generations will be well served.
