“Can we have 5 Laurens?!?! She is amazing!!” – Sarah H., Senior Administrator at Tygart Center High praise like that speaks volumes, and it’s about one of our newest providers, Lauren C.! In just a few months, Lauren has embraced incredible changes—from relocating to West Virginia to stepping into her first nurse practitioner role—and we’re thrilled to support her on this journey. But first, let’s go back to the beginning. What inspired Lauren to pursue a career in healthcare? “There was a period in my young adult life when I thought I was going to be working in business…Nursing school was on the table, but I convinced myself I was not ready to work in a role that dealt with saving lives; I did not believe in myself at such a young age. Well, I took one business marketing class, and that was not for me. I spoke with my mom about pursuing a nursing degree, and she believed in me enough for the both of us. I never looked back—I began to see myself as a provider and a caretaker and here I am now!” Most recently, Lauren was an ICU nurse in Pittsburgh, an experience that inspired her to pursue her master’s and prepared her for success as a new NP. “Being in an ICU is what made me want to pursue a degree in primary care. I thought a lot about, "what can I do to help people avoid getting here?” I always knew I wanted to help people, but more so I wanted to help care for the people that are underserved and often misunderstood, which leads me to long-term care and serving this population…Working in the ICU gave me the experience of being able to dive deeper into understanding the "why" behind health conditions.” How did Lauren end up in Pittsburgh ICU to a small town long-term care center in West Virginia? “I went to undergraduate school in West Virginia and always thought I would see myself settling down here one day...The transition has been amazing. I have friends around the area where I live, and I have never felt more "at home." Everyone has been so welcoming and helpful. Also, exploring the state during peak fall won me completely over!” Lauren has quickly proven to be a valuable part of the Tygart Center team, overcoming new grad challenges with strong support. “I give a huge credit to my manager, Brandee, and my CTL, Ashley, for being patient with me, understanding my background and my new role, and of course, for answering all of my crazy questions…I also have to give credit to the nursing staff I work with at Tygart Center for educating me in this new world of long-term care and for taking me on as a team member.” Her advice to other new grads? “My favorite piece of advice for new graduate NPs—always ask questions. Truly immerse yourself into understanding why you are doing what you are doing. Also, understand that you know more than you think you know! Being a new graduate NP is so nerve-wracking, trust me, we all feel this way at some point—so believe in yourself and lean on your managers and staff around you for help and advice.”

The National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization (NHPCO) published the Hospice Through the DEI Lens Research Report, which highlights how diverse populations perceive hospice care. The study, surveying over 1,200 individuals from African American, Hispanic, and LGBTQ+ communities, uncovers significant barriers, including low awareness and trust issues, that prevent equitable access to hospice services. The report recommends culturally responsive strategies, such as targeted education about hospice benefits and recruiting a more diverse workforce, to help overcome these challenges. Through these efforts, NHPCO aims to create a more inclusive hospice care model that addresses the unique needs of diverse communities.. Visit https://zurl.co/HZky to learn more! #dei #hospice
