Submission Spotlight: ECKHARDT LOFTS AND ACADEMY Eckhardt Lofts and Academy entails the historic renovation and reuse of the three-story former Eckhart Department Store located in the Broadway-Fillmore Historic District in Buffalo, NY. The project restores this long neglected and abandoned historic building with an 12,000 sf ground floor no-cost early education Head Start program, 28 affordable housing units, as well as infrastructure for a future indoor farm operation which will cultivate fresh local produce. Gated on-site parking and playground facilities will support the Head Start function, with a rain garden working to reduce storm water runoff. These improvements, along with upgraded exterior envelope, windows, lighting and signage will restore the Eckhardt building to the community cornerstone it once was. @elev8_architecture Photo Credit: @threesixtyviews #aiabuffalowny #aiadesignawards2024 #design #aiabuffalownydesignawards #architecture #buffalo #westernny

Submission Spotlight: MILLRACE AT PROVO STATION The City of Provo has traditionally lived in the shadows of Salt Lake City and wanted a landmark structure to change the perception of the once of the city. The project site became the focal point of the city to create a proper gateway into Provo. Working closely with city administration and local residents, zoning limitations were amended and a new vision for the city was created that required a substantial structure be erected. The site is a true multimodal hub with commuter rail, heavy rail, rapid transit, bike, pedestrian, vehicular and future manned drone and delivery drone landing zones. Inspired by the Mountain canyons of the Wasatch Front, Millrace at Provo Station emulates the unique geometry found in the rock outcroppings that line the canyon walls. Communal spaces are primarily located on the upper floors of Millrace symbolizing the numerous resorts and countless outdoor activities that draw valley floor residents to the higher elevations of the mountains. Seeking to redefine the typology of what multifamily housing should be, Millrace goes beyond the standard considerations of amenities, rather it focuses on the betterment of the modern living experience, connecting to the senses and rejuvenating the mind, body and soul. @elev8_architecture #aiabuffalowny #aiadesignawards2024 #design #aiabuffalownydesignawards #architecture #buffalo #westernny

Submission Spotlight: THE CLUB The Club is a significant addition to an existing single family residential home. The existing structure provided the launching point for a new modern entry sequence and additional square footage to house an interior wellness retreat. The existing and addition are joined by a double height foyer featuring a 19’ custom luminaire and wood accent wall with integrated lighting. The Club provides its inhabitants with endless hours of entertainment and relaxation. Some highlights of this modern home renovation/addition project include a stunning pool with multiple sun shelves, sunken firepit, and in-water bar seating. A fully refinished basement includes a home theater, arcade room, bar, and wine cellar. A spa with steam room and sauna provides a private nook for rejuvenation. The project also features a large outdoor kitchen equipped with pizza oven, smoker, and barbeque, and an outdoor roof terrace with a movie screen offers a place for cozy family time in the evening. Trusses were introduced to the attic of the existing single-family home, allowing the entire second floor to be hung and provide a column free first floor. Unobstructed views through the kitchen, living and dining rooms provide a connection to the entertainment deck and the remainder of the natural site beyond. @elev8_architecture Photo Credit: Ryan Delmar #aiabuffalowny #aiadesignawards2024 #design #aiabuffalownydesignawards #architecture #buffalo #westernny

Submission Spotlight: BIPLANE BIPLANE is a 200 SF exterior platform on the rear facade of an existing single-family residence, located within a suburban subdivision and adjacent to a heavily forested park. The challenge is to design a platform with an austere material palette that brings the occupant(s) closer to the surrounding flora and fauna, providing a greater relationship to nature while aging in place. An elevated horizontal platform is constructed with a – 2 foot separation – from the residence towards the forest beyond. The solution consists of two planes in a binary relationship: a horizontal wooden plane and vertical green plane. The platform floats – 30 inches above grade – over a surface of crushed gravel. A – 10 foot tall – hovering wall of ivy brings the distant greenery to a proximity and creates visual privacy. The two planes ‘borrow’ materiality from the forest, felt near and far, to enhance the sensory perception of the adjacent woodlands. As a result of these spatial separations, stereotomic elements of pure white concrete (ie. bridge and stairs) occupy the gaps, to connect the tectonic platform to house and ground. Furthering the experience of lightness, a planar steel guardrail is supported by – 7 thin posts – that shift to reveal open corners. Team: Christopher Romano, Michael Hoover, Lukas Fetzko Photo Credit: @studionortharchitecture #aiabuffalowny #aiadesignawards2024 #design #aiabuffalownydesignawards #architecture #buffalo #westernny

Submission Spotlight: ROSWELL PARK COMMUNITY OUTREACH AND ENGAGEMENT CENTER The Community Outreach and Engagement Center at Roswell Park’s Comprehensive Cancer Center exemplifies a thoughtful blend of historic preservation and modern adaptation addressing health inequalities in WNY and the historic Fruitbelt Neighborhood. Housed in a meticulously restored 150-year-old balloon-framed residence at 907 Michigan Avenue, the project creates a dynamic hub for cancer awareness, health navigation, financial wellness programs, and community-building services. By transforming this 1,300-square-foot historic home, the project revitalizes a 19th-century structure, retaining its heritage while adapting it to modern needs. The design approach is centered around three themes: Resurrection, Reconstruction, and Reconnection. Resurrection honors the building’s historical significance, salvaging the structure while updating key elements. Reconstruction symbolizes the neighborhood's desire for redevelopment, with a new addition extending south housing a conference room, offices, and small kitchen. This addition features modern materials—glass facades that glow at night, vertical wood siding, and exposed timber-faced columns symbolizing continual renewal. Reconnection links the site to the community through innovative design, featuring a tranquil garden and welcoming public spaces. This project aligns with AIA Design Awards criteria by merging historic character with modern functionality, creating a vibrant community asset that enhances both neighborhood identity and health outcomes. @youngandwrightarchitectural Photo Credit: YWA Photography Committee and Courtesy of Roswell Park and Comprehensive Cancer Center #aiabuffalowny #aiadesignawards2024 #design #aiabuffalownydesignawards #architecture #buffalo #westernny
