Marketing and legal teams need to stress the implications and safeguard with solid SOPs, and these need to be backed by HR ramifications for serious transgressions.

If I remember correctly it’s permitted to analyze, but absolutely not ok to target or de-anonymize without permission. The question implies that permission was not given. So, the remedy here is escalation, since mistake by a colleague, no matter how innocent, transfers to company and its reputation.
