A chemical spill would cause anyone to become anxious. The best practice is to fully understand the chemicals that operators and technicians interact with. Besides having the SDS available, the workforce should also have working knowledge of: × Spill kits available and how to set up a Dam, Dike, or Redirect the material. x Where in the process the chemical is present. x What classifies a spill as manageable. x Proper PPE and chemical suits readily. available. And if possible have secondary container. Technicians should carry on with caution but, the anxiety of not knowing what to do melts away with training and drills.

If a spill already occurs, it is already a mitigative measures that needa to be conducted, here are some points if an LOPC occurred:- 1) Know the product spill characteristics before responding (SDS, Labelling at site). 2) Trained OSC brief the ERT on respond strategies. 3) Isolate the source of spill with donning the correct PPE. 4) Ensure the source of spill does not go into drainage or water bodies that could harm the environment. Check the valves at bunds. 5) If it is flammable, consider blanketing with foam to prevent escalation to fire. 6) Waste collection and disposal arrangements.

To prepare for workplace emergencies, conduct risk assessments and develop an Emergency Response Plan (ERP) outlining procedures and responsibilities. Train employees on ERP, chemical handling, and spill response. Ensure adequate emergency equipment and supplies, including spill kits, PPE, and neutralizing agents. In case of a chemical spill, alert others, evacuate, contain the spill, identify the chemical, neutralize (if necessary), clean up, and dispose of waste.Regular training, drills, and equipment maintenance are crucial. Assign roles to an emergency response team, including Incident Commander, Spill Response Team, First Aid Responders, and Fire Response Team. Review and update ERP regularly to ensure readiness.

Relying upon emergency services to clean up your mistakes is not a responsible contingency plan. Ok for plan B if your plan doesn’t work but never plan A. As a responsible organisation you will have a trained response team. You will know the hazards of every product you hold and a plan for each. There is no time to spare so two things will be set in motion simultaneously. People not involved in dealing with the situation will evacuate the area and those that are will look at shutting off the spill and containing it before it reaches places that it can pollute. Sucker trucks might have to be brought in for big spills followed up by environmental clean up. The quicker and more effective your containment, the less you have to deal with.

During my initial training at RSRMA in 2018, I was asked to see the Movie-Deepwater Horizon, which was a eye opener to a beginner like me. - The safety check needs to be taken seriously, and should not be passed lightly. It is detrimental to Environmental, and have Reputational cost. - Chemical spill needs to be contained asap; There must be an SOP-Procedure and required Capacity Building- Training. Working with Reliance, this line always stuck to me- "Safety of person overrides all production targets." So, - Continuous Evacuation drill needs to be conducted, to prepare all the stakeholders to create a possibility(Capacity Building) for 0casualty. When you are in a team, Responsibility must be shared, and Accountability must be defined.
