Success is not a destination, but a journey! It’s important to give your best while meeting the short term goals within a time frame. And the efforts put in, will definitely take you a delta ahead towards the goal. It would be a good idea to ask oneself whether the short term goal achieved is in direction of the final goal. A regular review of efforts and gain is necessary to put things in perspective. I am a strong believer that there is no waste of time, or efforts or skills or talent, you definitely learn something that you might leverage at some point!

Think of balancing a short-term deadline and long-term success like running a marathon with checkpoints. The checkpoints (short-term goals) are important for tracking progress, but if you sprint recklessly to meet them, you risk burning out before the finish line (long-term success). Instead, you pace yourself, maintaining consistent energy and focus so that you not only hit each checkpoint but also complete the entire race in strong form. Address immediate needs efficiently, but always keep the long-term goal in mind, ensuring each short-term action reinforces the overall quality and stability of the project. Every small action should support both immediate needs and the bigger vision without sacrificing quality.

Short and Long Terms Goals both flow from and to the corproate strategy of the company. Rather than create a book no-one reads, we used execution principles to create a strategy process that could be fully renewed and refreshed every quarter. Then, using our strategy, we built our strategy-to-execution initiatives that drove the company's operating and operations plan and the budget. While it took about eighteen months to fully build the 'social system', we could easily trace short term to long-term objectives which made it easy to explain to investors.
