In SEO optimization and content integrity, I would go for the later one. There should not be a major compromise in terms of quality content. And what is behind SEO optimization? The key there is readability. And I count it into content integrity too.

This is a bit of a non sequitur Google’s own E-E-A-T guidelines emphasise that content needs to exhibit Expertise, Experience, Authoritativeness, and Trustworthiness. You can’t meet those guidelines if you are focussed on keyword stuffing. Focus on the reader and create engaging, helpful content that meets the EEAT guidelines, and if you do that you’ll be answering questions your desired readers have in the language they are using and typing into search engines.

At the core, these two goals of SEO optimization and content quality conflict with each other -- ask anyone who used to write clever headlines before SEO took over. In the end, I believe that content with an expert's voice -- whether that is your own or that is from a source -- outweighs cool keywords.
