What strategies have you found effective for overcoming language barriers in community meetings?

Simple language and perfect pronunciation, allowing pauses for reflection and for questions regarding any further clarification. There is not an expectation for meetings to have interpreters - therefore attendees generally do not attend unless they have a working language already. Not all participants, however, will be fluent. So keep it simple and to the point. Multilingual materials are not difficult to produce and are supportive for additional note taking.

The community I worked in was predominantly English and Spanish. We always made sure our resources are available in these two languages. We always have two presenters during our outreach programs, such as the Know Your Right at the Workplace Training by Central Ohio Worker Center.

A few things I’ll like to add is , pace yourself, and make sure you’re getting people’s attention Ask yourself..Do they look like they’re interested in what you’re saying, are they losing attention, .. and also seek feedback as to your way of communication making sure everyone is carried along and getting valuable information
